Port Kembla man asleep at the wheel

16 Mar, 2010 11:20 AM
A drunk driver found asleep behind the wheel of his car was dozing with his foot firmly planted on the accelerator, Lake Illawarra police allege.

About 2pm on Sunday, police were called to Cowper St in Port Kembla, in response to a driving complaint.

On arrival, police say they saw a loudly revving red 1994 Toyota Camry parked half on the roadway and half on the footpath.

Acting Inspector John Klepczarek said officers approached the alleged driver, a 46-year-old Port Kembla man, who was asleep at the wheel of the parked car and made several unsuccessful attempts to wake the dozing man.

Eventually he awoke and was asked to undergo a roadside breath test, which he allegedly refused.

The man was arrested and taken to Warilla Police Station where a breath analysis returned a reading of .215, four times the legal limit.

After further inquiries it was determined the vehicle was unregistered and uninsured.

As a result, the man's licence was suspended and he was charged with high-range PCA, two counts of using an unregistered vehicle, refusing to undergo a breath test and using an uninsured vehicle. He will appear in Port Kembla Local Court on April 28.
