Port Kembla worker crushed

23 Feb, 2012 03:26 PM
A man was crushed by a copper pipe in an industrial accident at Port Kembla this afternoon.

He has been airlifted to St George Hospital after the accident at copper manufacturing company MM Kembla about 3.20pm.

Ambulance district officer Terry Morrow said the 62-year-old was found unconscious under about a tonne of copper piping, crushing both lungs.

Paramedics stabilised the man and transferred him to nearby King George’s Park where he was airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

It is believed the man injured had been working for the company for decades and was believed to be working with a remote control crane in a tube mill.

WorkCover NSW is investigating the incident.
