Princes Hwy death raises toll to three

20 Nov, 2009 02:02 PM
An elderly woman has been killed in a car crash at Conjola, becoming the third person to die on the Princes Hwy in the past two weeks.

Police said the 76-year-old was driving south on the highway yesterday afternoon when her vehicle appeared to cross to the wrong side of the road and collided head on with a truck.

The Mollymook woman died at the scene, while the 30-year-old truck driver was not injured.

The highway was closed in both directions for several hours while police investigated the cause of the crash.

The woman was the third person to die on the South Coast highway in two weeks.

On November 6, an elderly woman was killed when the van she was a passenger in and a station wagon towing a box trailer collided at Gerringong.

One week later a motorcyclist died after he was knocked off his bike by a kangaroo on the Princes Hwy at South Nowra.

The 39-year-old man, from Bondi Junction, was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle south a kangaroo jumped onto the road.

The animal was hit by a car and bounced off into the man, knocking him from his motorcycle. He slid into the path of an oncoming Toyota Landcruiser.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the Conjola crash to contact Shoalhaven Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Divided dual lane roadway at least would reduce speed of crash to car involved and not to sum of two cars coming toward each other. Wander why politicians want to increase population to 35 million or more and not have infrastructure waiting for them?

Dear Barry and all others it is very sad that someone has died but if we all SLOWED DOWN most of these accidents would not happen. There is nothing wrong with the Princes Hwy, Picton Rd etc etc, the speed limit is 40 50 60, 70, 80, 90, 100 and below not 40+ 50+ 65+ 75+ 80+ 90+ 100+. I use the back road past Woonona East Public School because it's only 40 and I usualy end up with a whole bunch of vehicles behind me because they don't understand what the speed limit is all about, if you take the time to check the road rules 2klm over is an offence. Everybody SLOW DOWN and the roads will be a safer place for you, your family and friends.

In reply to mm. Why do you make this sweeping statement that if we all slowed down these accidents would not happen.Who knows the circumstaces of this accident at Lake Conjola,Im sure you dont.

Dear MM speeding was not mentioned to be the cause. Head on collision with moving truck in the opposite direction at 100km an hour even 80km an hour gives about 200 or 160 km total speed of smash compared to 100 or 80 if cars going in different directions were separated by dividing belt of trees or concrete barrier. As to speed I agree, people habitually drive just a bit above speed limit. When I drive just touch below speed limit often even "L"-plate drivers overtake me which I find strange. Every 20 km I travel I overtake 1 or 2 cars and few dozens of cars overtake me. If I could have $1 for every speeding car I would probably have too much money!
