Residents unite to save Wollongong Harbour

28 Oct, 2008 04:00 AM
An angry assembly formed in Wollongong last night to show government and developers there were at least 250 sets of eyes watching deals done at Wollongong Harbour.

The meeting was organised by Reclaim Our City out of concern that the State Government planned to sell the harbour to private developers.

It passed a resolution for greater transparency and for the Goverment to stop the expression of interest process in regard to development underway at the harbour unless it were put to a vote by residents.

The meeting also called on Wollongong City Council to oppose publicly the expression of interest process, "noting the consequences that secretive and murky deals with developers have already had for our city".

Reclaim Our City spokesman Arthur Rorris said non-attendance by the region's five Labor MPs was noted. He said the community would fight the development.

"I think proposals to develop and sell our harbour have hit a raw nerve - people view the harbour as an icon for our region," he said.

"This is a community that's prepared to fight this and win it."

Sell the harbour? No way! This was an opportunity for Labour to begin to redeeem themselves in the eyes of the public but I guess there were more important things to do on the night.

Again, this just shows the contempt that this Labor party has for the people of the Illawarra. Now trying to close Bulli Hospital by stealth, and trying to sell off OUR harbour! Lets start by getting rid of these local Labor pollies.

The harbour is an icon, but a derelict one. My guess is the only people wanting to leave the harbour alone are the older population. It is about time Wollongong was developed and people stopped living in the past. It's the older generation in the Illawarra who are ruining this area for the younger generations.

How do you sell a harbour? By the litre?

Yeah, right g.l The older generation are ruining Wollongong for us, never mind countless DA approvals in the last five years for unsightly apartment after unsightly apartment. Never mind a planning policy that has allowed Wollongong to fall victim of urban sprawl and has resulted in an awful skyline. Never mind a disregard for road maintainance, maintainance of parks and public spaces. Sure perhaps it would be good to see the mall and the pavilion redeveloped but the development that has occurred in Wollongong in the last 10 years has only served to give us an ugly town.

Finally, the people of the Illawarra realise that ALP politicians DO NOT have the electorate's best interests at heart.

Selling OUR harbour is just not on. To those who have mentioned the heritage value of the harbour; you're right.

To those who talk about the need to make it more attractive; you're right, too.

There must be a balance - people come to see out beautiful little harbour and learn about its history. But we need to provide decent facilities for all, locals and visitors.

Another case of theft of public space.

Obi is spot-on. There must be a balance. The public space should be beautified and improved in the best interests of public utility and safety.

This should not however be a blank cheque for private interests to roll in under Macquarie St fiat and commandeer the public space for their private profits.

Arthur Rorris should run for mayor.

As I see it the council has already vandalised Belmore Basin with it's so called improvements. Since when does concrete ever replace or beautify the natural sand and grass for children to play on.
