Motorcyclists involved in a fatal crash at Corrimal may have been travelling at least twice the speed limit when they collided with a ute driven by an elderly driver.Witnesses to the crash, at the corner of Albert St and the Princes Hwy about midday on Saturday, alleged the three motorcyclists involved were speeding southbound on the Princes Hwy."A local driver was pulling out of Albert St (on to the Princes Hwy)," one man said.
Crash victim Ian Nicholas loved life "The bikes were flying and one of the bikes was up on one wheel."He estimated their speed at about 150km/h.Another witness said he heard the motorcycles allegedly revving at the traffic lights at Bellambi Lane."They were fanging it up the road," he said."Then I heard: 'Bang, bang'."Woonona man Ian Nicholas was in a Holden Rodeo ute turning on to the highway from Albert St when the collision occurred.One of the motorcyclists, a 37-year-old man from Sutherland, riding a Suzuki 750cc bike, collided with the driver's side of the ute.The 37-year-old man died at the scene.Mr Nicholas was rushed to Wollongong Hospital, where he later died.A second rider, a 27-year-old Casula man riding a Kawasaki 1200cc bike, also hit the ute.He ended up 150m south of the crash scene, where he came to a stop after hitting a gutter.He was in a stable condition in Wollongong Hospital yesterday.A third motorcycle rider was not injured in the incident.Wreckage from the two motorcycles was strewn for hundreds of metres along the highway between Albert St and Rothery St.The Princes Hwy was blocked for hours after the crash as police from Wollongong and Lake Illawarra, detectives, police rescue and the crash investigation unit worked at the scene.Onlookers gathered near the intersection.Police will prepare a report for the coroner.Senior Constable Phil Hamilton from the crash investigation unit said police were waiting for the results of blood tests before they could continue preparing the coroner's report.No-one has been charged so far in relation to the collision. Police have not released the identities of the motorcyclists.
