Riot police called to ugly Oz Day celebrations

27 Jan, 2009 09:17 AM
RIOT Police from Sydney were called to Wollongong last night as Australia Day celebrations took an ugly turn.

Wollongong police say alcohol fuelled at least four violent brawls in Wollongong and the northern suburbs, with police from Lake Illawarra being called in for back-up.

Wollongong police Inspector Ken McDonald said it was the worst violence on Australia Day his colleagues had ever seen.

Today Wollongong residents have also woken to discover that overnight vandals have teared apart buildings and destroyed property.

The key words after violence seems to be 'alcohol fuelled'. ... and that's a legal drug!

I was in Wollongong to watch the fireworks with some family, we were walking along and then a huge group formed, to our amazement someone yelled out that 2 girls were in a fight, this is what people were running to see.

Then when the fireworks were over, walking back to the car, 2 more females, one was holding a tissue to her nose whilst the other was using obcenities and threatening this other young woman.

I am disgusted and embarrased for the parents and these children.

What has happened to having respect for others and also respect for yourselves?

These girls portrayed the out of control youth of today.

OH and also, girls, the Australian flag does not constitute a dress with nothing else on.

You people are a disgrace to Australia.

Whats with the youth of today? No respect whatsoever.

And where is the parental responsibility considering a majority of these drunk hoons were due back at school today?

To the so called patriotic youths who think Australia Day gives them an excuse to drink excessively, racially abuse other people and then get into brawls with each other. You should all go to a mirror and have a good hard look at yourselves, What you would see is nothing but a pathetic loser who thinks its Australian to act like a moron and disrupt others who want to enjoy the day.Your behaviour couldn't be more UnAustralian if you tried. Next year either stay home or go to another country where this type of behavior is accepted. This is "AUSTRALIA" so start acting and behaving like Australians.

I was walking on the beach Monday morning at 7.30am. I was surprised to see a group of young men approximately 18 already drunk. They were load, offensive and had little concern for others around them. I support youth, but one must draw a line.

Lucky I didn't take my children for what i believed would be family friendly Australia Day Celebrations- to witness such violence would have scared them- I feel sorry for the parents who had children there who may have been traumatised by such behavior! We decided not to put a flag up in our window this year in case people thought we were white supremisists & it insighted racial violence after the way the Aussie flag was used in Cronulla by these thugs.

Maybe some of these "patriotic" young people could start by realising the flag is something that goes on a flagpole, not around the neck with the end of it dragging in the dirt, they would then start to learn respect for others and realise Australia Day is a day for celebration for all, including newcomers and migrants to this country - remember, other than the aboriginal people, we were all migrants once.

I hope that Wollongong Councils recently installed CCTV camera's - located throughout the city centre will pick up footage of a mob of idiots and morins who paraded through Central Wollongong on Australia Day. I managed to see them for a couple of minutes as I came out of Fitness First - at approximately 3:30pm (not sure of the exact time - because I didi not have my watch with me. The mob comprised about 30 teens (mostly boys) draped in Australian flags etc. I saw them walking past Kenny Street (refer attached image from Google earth) - heading eastwards past Fitness First. Most of them were drinking in public. Some were smashing beer bottles in the middle of the street Some were walking in the middle of the street causing traffic to stop. One stopped a car - the occupants of which were terrified - while another had one leg on the bonnet while he tried to "hump" the review mirror. They were swearing and threatening any onlookers - including an elderly couple - whom they spat at - and asked "what the f*** are you looking at?" This was all in the space of a minute that I witnessed - who knows what else they got up to. Hopefully if the images were caught on CCTV - charges will be laid.

I was in wollongong all Aus day with my mates... and all i experienced were girls and guys fighting on the beach. I am 18 years old and it annoys the hell out of me. Its not all the youth of today only a very small amount but they manage to do enough damage to ruin it for the rest of us.
