NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson brought his anti-coal seam gas message to the Illawarra yesterday as Liberal Party MPs who say he helped authorise new mines while in power accused him of hypocrisy.

Mr Robertson wants the State Government to suspend all coal seam gas exploration licences in the Illawarra until the long-term effects are fully understood.

It’s a message Mr Robertson has been taking around the state as opposition grows to the mining practice which involves releasing trapped gas.

Environmentalists and farmers say coal seam gas mining could pollute underground aquifers and potentially drinking water.

Mr Robertson said better understanding of coal seam gas risks was needed.

‘‘I’m calling on the O’Farrell government to act now to protect areas like Darkes Forest here in the Illawarra from coal seam gas mining,’’ he said.

‘‘The impacts of coal seam gas mining on aquifers and groundwater, hundreds of metres below the surface, are not yet fully understood.’’

Member for Keira Ryan Park said while the gas industry had the potential to deliver significant economic benefits, further drilling shouldn’t be allowed ‘‘at the expense of local communities and our precious water resources’’.

‘‘It is absolutely staggering when you look at maps of the Illawarra, overlaid with existing coal seam gas exploration licences ... the entire region is exposed and the water table underneath it,’’ he said.

However, Mr Robertson’s stance drew criticism from the Liberal Party.

Kiama MP Gareth Ward said coal seam gas licences were approved and extended while Labor was in power.

‘‘Given the fact that Mr Robertson oversaw the issuing of licences while in government, for him to now oppose coal seam gas in opposition is the height of hypocrisy,’’ Mr Ward said.

Stop the "blame game".

Bring CSG to a STOP.

The public has spoken.

John Robinson certainly has an image problem. This is a great place to hang his hat.

Politicians will say and do anything to fool the people, we should all know that, but this type of hypocricy has risen to a new level.when one considers who was responsible for these licences to be issued in the first place. Labor has stooped to a new low and that is significant because you usually cannot go lower than a snakes belly but congratulations Mr Robertson you have done it. Where is the proof that this type of drilling is actually doing damage to the geology, so far all I've read is that it "could or might" pollute underground aquifers and potentially drinking water. Give us proof.

What I don't understand is why is NO ONE is mentioning the fact that the area of Darkes Forest to Helensburgh and district is a proven high bushfire zone. How the hell could ANYONE including supposed gas companies have the audacity to do gas mining in those areas???? Doesn't anyone remember the Bushfire Storms of 10 years ago? That was caused by a spark from Intregal Energy. Now Apex propose pipe lines with liquified gas running across the area!!!! They can never completely give guarantees of being safe. As for Labor now being against it, they're the ones who okayed it all! Yes, hypocrites!

You fool John Robertson...we are not all politically ignorant...we know which former state government approved and issued these licences....."NOT happy John"

Robertson, Ryan and Labor have absolutely NO CREDIBILITY on this issue. It's extraordinary hypocrisy for John Robertson to be talking about CSG licences when he was the minister for energy under the government that was handing them out. Current NSW government put a moratorium on fracking and use of chemicals as soon as they gained office. The rights or wrongs of CSG mining will now be debated but this is what the failed Labor Gov should have done so let's not be fooled by a deluded Robertson and his holier than thou approach!

Went out to Darkes Forest not long ago....every house and property has a 'stop CSG' sign out front....if EVERY person in the area is against the project then it has to be stopped. Such an environmentally sensitive and beautiful area too.
