Rocks hurled at cars on Windang Bridge

23 Jun, 2009 09:52 AM
Rocks were thrown at vehicles on the Windang Bridge on Sunday, with reports of damage to at least three cars.

Lake Illawarra duty officer Inspector Steve Johnson said the first incident occurred about 9.50pm when a car was driving over the bridge on Shellharbour Rd, Windang.

"The driver heard a bang on the lower part of the front windscreen," he said.

"The windscreen was cracked and it appears a rock has been thrown at the vehicle."

Police attended the scene, but could not find the projectile or those responsible for the attack.

About 10pm, while police were still in the vicinity, a southbound vehicle was hit.

"The driver heard two loud bangs on his vehicle," Insp Johnson said.

Again the car was damaged, but no evidence of a rock or the perpetrators were found. No-one was injured in either attack.

A report of two more attacks over the weekend was posted by an online reader on the Illawarra Mercury website.

Identifying themselves only as "roundthemup", the reader said eggs were thrown at their car on Saturday about 10.30pm while driving on the bridge.

The reader also said that on Sunday afternoon, a Sydney driver's windscreen was smashed by a rock while driving over the bridge.

Insp Johnson issued a warning while appealing to the public for more information about the incidents.

"This is a very serious offence," he said. "The maximum penalty is five years' imprisonment."

Anyone with information about these incidents should contact Lake Illawarra police on 4295 2699 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Well, you only have to look at the light sentences they recieve and the treatment by some magistrates to see they know they can get away with it.

They should be dealt with severely, no matter their age. This is one of the most despicable crimes, name and shame them, and publish their addresses so that everyone knows where these cowards live. Don't let them hide behind their ages. It's about time that these creeps learnt that there will be consequences for their pathetic actions.

Home-girl............I totally agree with you. Like scumbags are going to care about doing anything or hurting anyone if there are no serious consequences. When is the justice system going to stop going easy on these people and making excuses like "oh my daddy doesn't love me" or "my Mummy didn't breastfeed me". Give me a break. We've all had hard times but we don't go and try and hurt people because of it. Start protecting the innocent people instead of the scum.

Five years! Yeah right that will be the day. I agree with all you guys. They don't care because they don't get punished. I so totally agree with you Blah well said, they do blame everone else but themselves for the thoughtless actions that they do.
