The WIN Stadium operator has said it "can't be confident" the new western grandstand roof will be safe because it has not been handed new plans for the roof or received a briefing from the builders.
NSW Government ministers Greg Pearce and Graham Annesley announced on Monday that the western grandstand would be open by early June, allowing the St George Illawarra Dragons to play six games during the 2012 season.
However, yesterday they were accused of not being open with the body that manages the stadium, The Illawarra Venues Authority (IVA).
The pair rejected the claims and said they had taken all precautions to make sure the roof was safe and that the IVA had been kept up to date at every step.
Yesterday, IVA chairman Chris Christodoulou said he could not guarantee the new roof was safe because he had not received any engineering report on it.
"I can't be confident in anything at the moment because I have not seen any detailed report with any professional analysis on the new design," he said.
Mr Christodoulou represents the IVA on the Project Co-Ordination Group (PCG), a committee set up to help organise construction of the grandstand. He sits on the group together with a representative from the government agency Communities NSW.
Mr Christodoulou said the group was now out of the loop and had not been given details of the new design.
"Whilst I remain the chairperson of the IVA and on the PCG it is incumbent on me to satisfy myself that this new design will not fail in the future and the only way I can be assured of that is to receive some written professional advice that I can scrutinise."
Communities NSW did not say yesterday whether it was expecting a report, but said it had "confidence in the extensive professional expertise behind the repair work".
A spokesman for the Sports Minister Mr Annesley said he was unsure whether the PCG group had been handed a report on the repair works, but said he had been told by Mr Christodoulou that "he was aware of the remediation works schedule and the redesign plans".
The Liberal State Government will replace the IVA with a new authority called Venues NSW, expected within the next couple of months. Mr Christodoulou, who is also assistant secretary at Unions NSW, was appointed by the Labor state government.
A spokesman for Mr Pearce's office would not say whether he had consulted with the IVA before announcing this week's plans, instead referring to earlier comments by the minister.
On Monday, the minister said the final design had been completed with "testing and independent party review".
