Safety of stadium's new roof questioned

11 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
The WIN Stadium operator has said it "can't be confident" the new western grandstand roof will be safe because it has not been handed new plans for the roof or received a briefing from the builders.

NSW Government ministers Greg Pearce and Graham Annesley announced on Monday that the western grandstand would be open by early June, allowing the St George Illawarra Dragons to play six games during the 2012 season.

However, yesterday they were accused of not being open with the body that manages the stadium, The Illawarra Venues Authority (IVA).

The pair rejected the claims and said they had taken all precautions to make sure the roof was safe and that the IVA had been kept up to date at every step.

Yesterday, IVA chairman Chris Christodoulou said he could not guarantee the new roof was safe because he had not received any engineering report on it.

"I can't be confident in anything at the moment because I have not seen any detailed report with any professional analysis on the new design," he said.

Mr Christodoulou represents the IVA on the Project Co-Ordination Group (PCG), a committee set up to help organise construction of the grandstand. He sits on the group together with a representative from the government agency Communities NSW.

Mr Christodoulou said the group was now out of the loop and had not been given details of the new design.

"Whilst I remain the chairperson of the IVA and on the PCG it is incumbent on me to satisfy myself that this new design will not fail in the future and the only way I can be assured of that is to receive some written professional advice that I can scrutinise."

Communities NSW did not say yesterday whether it was expecting a report, but said it had "confidence in the extensive professional expertise behind the repair work".

A spokesman for the Sports Minister Mr Annesley said he was unsure whether the PCG group had been handed a report on the repair works, but said he had been told by Mr Christodoulou that "he was aware of the remediation works schedule and the redesign plans".

The Liberal State Government will replace the IVA with a new authority called Venues NSW, expected within the next couple of months. Mr Christodoulou, who is also assistant secretary at Unions NSW, was appointed by the Labor state government.

A spokesman for Mr Pearce's office would not say whether he had consulted with the IVA before announcing this week's plans, instead referring to earlier comments by the minister.

On Monday, the minister said the final design had been completed with "testing and independent party review".

"Mr Christodoulou represents the IVA on the Project Co-Ordination Group (PCG), a committee set up to help organise construction of the grandstand." I'm sure he approved the first engineers report and look where that got us! Move on Mr Christodoulou.

Ofcourse there is a report somewhere on the failure. If you don't know how it failed in the first place for sure then how can you re-design it so the new roof won't also fail? If they are rebuilding it before the final conclusion for the failure is made well then that's just poor engineering practice.

I hope that the Showground "Hill" is open at all times to the public come Calton League Final's as I for one won't be be squeezing (no room between seat rows) into the faulty new cheap and nasty "Wobble Stand"

bulldoze the hill down move the club over near the water front, and relocate the ground to mcclennan park, and in twenty years time we will have a ground capable of holding 50 thousand ,not this randomly thrown together disaster that will only ever hold around 18-20 thousand.

Ignorance is no excuse Chris Christodoulou. Perhaps he is to busy with his union commitments to be effective in his stadium role.

Mr Christodulu, why do you think that you should be the one to be "confident" in the new design?

Are you a qualified engineer? I think not.

What can you add to the process and are you able to "add value"? I think not.

Did you have "confidence" in the original design and construction? Was that successful? I think not.

Enough said.

For the current State Government the IVA is an irrevelance as is the Chairperson and unionist Christodolou. His opinions and that of the IVA matter no longer. Its all about Venues NSW.

Think Doust would be sensible to wait and deal with Venues NSW before agreeing to a deal re playing at WIN Wollongong.

As shown on the design drawings in the background of yesterdays photo the end sections enclosed in clouded lines signify the changes made to the revised engineering drawing i.e. modifications to the original design to make the roof structurally sound the drawings would have been through a rigourous design review before the changes were signed off by the structural engineer Mr Christodoulou no need to see any report just fix it and get on with it should not take that long gee the N05 blast furnace reline took the same time that has been stated to fix this roof its not that big a job you know

The Management of the WIN Stadium & WEC are employed professionals who have run the WEC and WIN Stadium well in the past.

Peter Doust just doesnt want to play ANY Dragons games in Wollongong.

It will make no difference who he deals with, the IVA or Venues NSW.

Its about time Peter Doust looks at his team and realises that most of them come from the Illawarra.

Just stop for a minute. Like the leaning tower of piza, tourists would flock to see the marvel of the loose roof flopping in the breeze.
