Police, lifeguards, an Ambulance Service of NSW helicopter, the Westpac rescue helicopter, water police and Marine Rescue Port Kembla all rushed to the scene and commenced a grid search of an area near the harbour’s eastern breakwall.
The search was called off about 4pm after a witness came forward and told police he had seen the spearfisher enter the water, then get his gear snagged on rocks before cutting himself free and walking away.
Police are now urging the fisherman to contact Wollongong police on 4226 7899 and confirm he is safe.
