Surrounded by family and friends at Kiama's Blowhole Point, besieged MP and sacked Police Minister Matt Brown today publicly apologised to the people of Kiama.
``I am a human being, I made a mistake and I'm going to cop the consequences of that mistake,'' he told dozens of reporters milling about him.
Mr Brown was sacked as NSW Police Minister just three days into the job by new Premier Nathan Rees after allegations arose of an alcohol-fuelled sexual indiscretion in his office during Budget night in June this year.
While Mr Brown admitted to inappropriate behaviour on that night, he strongly denied claims he had danced semi-naked on a couch and simulated a sex act on colleague and Wollongong MP Noreen Hay. He branded the allegations ``appalling and offensive and total lies''.
The visibly upset MP said it was a parliamentary tradition for work colleagues to get together and celebrate after the budget was delivered.
``During that celebratory night I behaved in a manner not befitting a minister,'' he said.
``I spoke to the premier about this and it was agreed I would tender my resignation.
``I am not trying to duck and weave this issue but this is a pretty tough day for me.
``I am truly sorry for any offence I may have caused by that behaviour.''
He refused to answer questions about his future or give any detailed description of what actually occurred in his parliamentary room on Budget night.
