Shark attacks snorkeller at Windang

12 Jan, 2009 01:40 PM
A man has been taken to Shellharbour Hospital with leg injuries after a suspected shark attack in Lake Illawarra.

The 23-year-old was was snorkelling near the Windang Boat Ramp at 10.45am today when he was bitten on the leg.

The man flagged down boat users who helped him to shore before calling emergency services.

Bendigo Bank Australian Aerial Patrol was on the scene within 10 minutes but failed to spot any sharks in the water. However, general manager Harry Mitchell believes a shark attack was likely.

``I would not be surprised if it was a bull shark,'' he said.

``They are a nasty little shark, very aggressive.''

The attack follows two other incidents over the weekend.

Jonathon Beard, 31, of Brisbane, was surfing with friends at Fingal Beach in northern NSW about 9.30am yesterday when he was bitten on his upper left thigh.

And 13-year-old Hannah Mighall was saved from a 5m white pointer off north east Tasmania when her cousin hit the shark and took her to shore on his surfboard.

Craig Roberts, manager of life saving at Surf Life Saving NSW, said bull sharks, great white sharks and tiger sharks were the three species associated with attacks on humans.

"Hammerheads and grey nurses are the most sighted but bull, tiger and great white sharks are the ones that attack," Mr Roberts said.

With all the warm water 22 degrees and alot of fish about, pods of dolphins, there are bound to be sharks following. On 2 of say 7 trips in my boat out to Bass Point i have seen a shark on two occasions. The lake is open to the sea, what were conditions like? Under the bridge is dark and murky while the channels are realatively crystal clear. No one wants to see shark attacks but now it it food for thought. An old man told me of 30 years ago when they use to catch tigers sharks, bull and hammerhead in the entrance of the lake. Maybe it is not a tale. With Great Whites the top of the food chain and PROTECTED it is no wonder anedotal evidence would say they are on the increase. look at Port Stephens with all the young ones growing up there. I think the scienctists are wrong they wont be extrinct, rather more prominant. Yes it is their domain but we are dominate speices on earth. Maybe a quota to Cull Great Whites might be in order. Years ago fishos used to catch great whites off Kiama, i have seen old photos. Oh and maybe the trawlers are harming the ocean, It is said that with the closure of the Southern NSW fishing grounds trawlers have had to head North. Imagine if they closed the grounds in the lake to Wollongong as recently suggested. Humans first!!!

The Lake authority was warned when they built sea wall to keep lake open once they opened it at very high tide sharks would enter the lake hence this poor shark has been locked up in lake due to the entrance and surounding channels have been clogged with washed in sand and half windang beach. This poor shark was useing natures gift of it knew this would be very high king tide today at 9-50am out side entrance and 1 hour later in lake would be its only chance to escape this year !!!

Fisherman Surfer, in response to your comments above, may i propose that we also have a "QUOTA TO CULL" a few humans who eat the Sharks resources. For god's sakes figures just quoted, out of est 60 attacks a year, there MAYBE only be one fatality, and that is the risk your take when you put a toe in the ocean, stop with the scare tactics people.

I got chased out of the lake the other day by a large great white. Don't go in the water people!

My family and I were walking over the Windang Bridge about six weeks ago and saw what appeared to be about 20 baby sharks (30cm-40cm long). I told my neighbours and a guy who was fishing and they did not believe me.

Please let's keep things in perspective - the presence of sharks in the lake is not new, thankfully the lake has come back to life to the point where the marine life is returning. The sea is the sharks' habitat, respect them and the water. We humans have domination of the rest, shouldn't we be happy with that?

Scare Tactics, Read my email carefull again it was a well weighted piece.

Cull humans, you're kidding right. Hilter wanted to cull a few humans too, millions....I believe statistics can used to quantify any debate and 95% are made up on the spot. Look at the anedotal evidence, shark attack, great white shark attack, great white shark attack, great white it goes on. Yes i pointed out we are in their domain. But unchecked there will be more attacks. I want my kids to enjoy the ocean as i have had and will continue. One further point, as a fisherman i fished quite a bit over xmas and caught dozens and dozens of kingies, flatties and samon. I keep 4 legal ones and let the samon go anyway. Fisho's look at the limits of bags and sizes. Do you suggest we eat grass. Oh and i havent seen Great whites yet but the day will come and i for in my boat hopefully will c$%p myself and get away from it. Oh and i scuba dived 70kms out to sea some years ago on the great barrier reef and came fact to face with a bronze whaler and a burracutta, i dont know what scarfed me more. All care needs to be taken no matter what we do. And i stand by what i beleive that great whites unchecked at the top of the food chain will be a problem. Since 1971 they have been 44 RECORDED worldwide great white attacks, how many have been missed or put down as lost at sea. Harold Holt was a possible great white attack but again not recorded. 16 in australia since 1975

All sharks should be put onto the endagered species list along with most fish. Unfortunately we have taken this old predator's food source and now it's looking in places where it can find food.

If we stop overfishing things would get better. A word of advice - don't swim in unpopulated areas were no-one is close for help.
