Shoalhaven reels in national awards

27 Feb, 2010 06:20 AM
The Shoalhaven picked up two titles at the Australian Tourism Awards in Hobart last night.

Booderee National Park won gold for Best Indigenous Tourism and Kangaroo Valley's Crystal Creek Meadows Luxury Cottages and Spa Retreat won the Qantas Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism.

Booderee National Park, owned by the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community, was recognised not only for its significance to Koori people, but also for the hands-on approach it takes to sharing the park and its pre-European history with more than 400,000 visitors a year.

The judges were impressed with the only Aboriginal-owned botanic gardens in Australia and the way the park continued to give a substantial boost to the Jervis Bay region's tourism industry and economy.

For Crystal Creek Meadows it was the second Australian Tourism Awards gong in two years. The attraction boasts four luxury eco-cottages set in Kangaroo Valley's National Trust landscape.

Last year it won best hosted accommodation.

This year the judges were impressed with the policies that owners Christopher and Sophie Warren have introduced over the past five years to make their business more sustainable.

The couple have significantly reduced greenhouse gas emissions as occupancy rates have risen.

Shoalhaven Tourism manager Tom Phillips said the fantastic result for the region's tourism industry and wider economy last night came on the back of a very solid summer.

He said that was due to the quality of operators such as Coolangatta Estate, which was also a finalist last night in the Tourism Winery category.

NSW Tourism Minister Jodie Mackay said Sydney and the Mid North Coast were the only other regions in the state to boast two winners.
