Speeding was uncharacteristic of Adam Nall, the Oak Flats man who was behind the wheel of a green Holden Commodore that slammed into a power pole and exploded on Friday night.
"At work he was the authority to work co-ordinator so he would sign on in the morning and run a crew of about five or six blokes so he was pretty responsible and he was always motivated and always happy," co-worker at Andreco-Hurll Refractory Services Adam Rathbone said.
"He always looked after his crew and he was a good team worker. I don't want to speculate on what happened in the car but he wouldn't drink and drive, that's for sure."
Mr Nall and three workmates from Andreco-Hurll were driving from drinks at the Unanderra Hotel to dinner at the Dapto Leagues Club when the accident occurred.
Mr Rathbone said he had known Mr Nall for five years. In June he joined Mr Nall in South Kuta for a surfing holiday where he discovered the secret generosity of his workmate.
On his first trip to Bali in 2003, Mr Nall met a Balinese photographer called Froggy and the pair became firm friends. Mr Nall took him a surfboard on his June trip and was due to return to Bali for Froggy's wedding next year.
"Just to see his generosity ... everywhere we went he would pay for Froggy's meals and take him out ... and that's the thing that concerns me, I don't think Froggy knows yet," Mr Rathbone said.
