An ambulance spokesman said paramedics took a man to Wollongong Hospital in a serious condition following the accident about 5am, but could not provide details of his injuries.
A hospital spokeswoman this afternoon said the 49-year-old was in a stable condition.
The toppled truck spilled diesel across the road along with several tonnes of coal, blocking the southbound lanes until about 10.30am.
