Staff to go at 17 Illawarra train stations: opposition

02 Feb, 2012 02:46 PM
Seventeen train stations in the Illawarra could lose their staff under the State Government’s proposed shake up of railways authority RailCorp, Labor MPs claimed today.

Wollongong MP Noreen Hay made the claims citing media reports which suggested stations with less than 2000 passengers a day might fall victim to cost cuts.

The State Government is conducting a comprehensive review of RailCorp in an effort to make it leaner and more reliable. At present RailCorp costs the state about $10 million a day.

Axe hovers over RailCorp jobs

The Government has not ruled out job cuts as part of the review which is being led by David Callahan, former head of Sydney Ferries.

Ms Hay seized upon media reports suggesting one option for RailCorp would be to axe 570 positions by not staffing stations where there were fewer than 2000 passengers a day. These findings were made in a 2008 report by consultants LEK, hired by the then Labor Government to look into the rail costs.

In the Illawarra stations affected would include Austinmer, Bulli, Otford, Stanwell Park, Thirroul, Bellambi, Corrimal, Fairy Meadow, Towradgi, Woonona, Kiama, Minnamurra, Albion Park, Dapto, Coniston, Cringila and Port Kembla according to Ms Hay.

"Some of the most vulnerable people in our community should not be forced off our rail network because the Transport Minister is making it more difficult for them to use," she said in a statement.

Liberal member for Kiama Gareth Ward described the statement as ‘‘out right hypocrisy.’’

‘‘On what basis are these claims made - they are based on a report the Labor Party commissioned.’’

A number of those stations are already unmanned, so I wouldn't give too much credence to a report issued in 2008 and probably based on even older data.

On the other hand, if all the jobs keep disappearing in the Illawarra a lot more people will be commuting to Sydney and it will be the busiest rail corridor in the country! I have no faith in any political party, self interest is their only motivation.

they are already undermanned and understaffed. No one feels safe to catch trains. Typical of the Liberal government. Hit em where it hurts

A four year old report is being flung around by Noreen Hay and is crying foul..... Really Noreen? What happend to the rail network under Labor?? I think the few remaining Labor pollies should be waiting a few more years before they start critisizing the Liberal Party. After all the Libs are only trying to fix what Labor neglected for years.

A station manager at Fairy Meadow station is pointless in my opinion. What do they actually do?

RailCorp should be sacking the 331 senior managers earning over $150,000 pa, not front line staff.

RailCorp does not "cost" the state $10 million a day. That can only be the view of a bean counter who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

you can only buy your ticket at the ticket machine at Bulli so if it is manned what do they do?

I remember the old NSWGR and worked at almost all stations throughout the metro system, even the opening of the sparkling new eastern suburbs line. Back then State Transit still was a major employer of this state. It's sad for me, to see stations and customer service disappear practically in the outer urban areas such as Newcastle and Wollongong. My opinion is both these cities focus on building away from existing rail corridors!
