Stylish Cliff Rd promenade unveiled

24 Dec, 2009 04:00 AM
Construction fences have been removed and traffic diversions lifted to reveal an impressive new pedestrian promenade and timber viewing platform over Belmore Basin.

The $1.1 million first stage of the Cliff Rd promenade extends from Brighton Lawn to Georges Place, above the Continental Pool.

Work on the $2.6 million second stage will begin after the summer school holidays, extending the promenade to North Wollongong Beach.

The Federal Government is contributing $2.9 million to the project under the economic stimulus program.

Project manager Lance Hazell said the main features included the new 3m-wide pavement, improved lighting, seating, new plants and the timber viewing platform.

"One of the really nice things is that we have integrated four trees into the viewing platform," he said.

The installation of black balustrade fencing along the new length of the promenade was only completed in the past four days and Mr Hazell said it really topped off the project.

Council general manager David Farmer said yesterday's opening was an important day in the ongoing development of the Blue Mile.

"The great thing about our tourism assets is they also add to the liveability for residents," Mr Farmer said.

"Having something like the space on this viewing platform takes some pedestrians off the cycleway at the bottom of the hill and reduces the congestion.

"The creation of this area provides a better experience all round."

He noted there had been significant progress on the Blue Mile during the past year.

"This time last year we were taking the fence down at Brighton Lawn and in just 12 months we have completed major upgrades along Flagstaff Hill, Belmore Basin and Cliff Rd."

Cunningham MP Sharon Bird said the promenade would become a well-utilised scenic walk.

"First we had our Grand Pacific Drive and now we have a grand walk. It is just tremendous," Ms Bird said.

"I would like to extend my appreciation to the contractors who have done a terrific job."

Its nice that Mr Farmer thinks that this "tourism asset adds to the liveability of residents". I think it looks great, but surely it is an asset first for the resident/ratepayers. Tourists will come if the area is liveable and friendly, but we live here all the time. It also seems that every time some work is done on the Blue Mile we lose more parking.

WelL I guess the money spent here is being put to better use than the 11m wasted on the "gateway" building on top of Bulli.

I had my first visit this morning. Looks great and adds much to the already lovely Cliff Road. The Council General Manager and his staff are doing a solid job on Cliff Road but they have to be increasingly careful not to turn a lovely natural setting into a sugary Disneyesque experience. I refer of course to the ever diminishing lawn/grass areas for people to sit and relax on and its replacement with expanded kids play equipment, hard seating, concrete and parking spaces most of which has occurred at Belmore Basin.

Why has the invisible do-nothing-for-her-safe-labor-ele ctorate Sharon Bird showed up, is there an election imminent? She didn't pay for this project, the taxpayers of this city paid for it.

Ted, Sharon Bird probably acted on invitation, and she IS the elected member. It suprises me the State member didn't have her mug in there somewhere,as whenever a camera is in sight, she is there, spoiling the shot.

Must say the new Cliff Rd promenade is great. Amazing how quickly it was done Now we just need the local council to address our nationwide high unemployment and poor transport within Wollongong and to Sydney
