Swimmer missing off Wollongong beach

09 Mar, 2009 10:38 AM
A large-scale search is under way for a man who went missing during a night-time swim off City Beach in Wollongong.

A police helicopter and emergency services are scouring the beach after the 19-year-old Fairfield man failed to return to shore last night.

The man entered the water with six friends and got caught in a rip, police said.

His friends managed to make it back to shore, however the 19-year-old was heard calling for help about 8.45pm.

Police from Wollongong and Lake Illawarra Local Area commands last night began searching the area, assisted by NSW Marine Area Command officers, the ambulance helicopter, and Volunteer Rescue Coastal Guard.

They continued to search the area until 11pm, when the operation was suspended.

Police continued to conduct sweeps along the cliffs throughout the night, and the search resumed at first light this morning.

More information to follow.
