Tense stand-off at Belmorgan site

20 Jun, 2009 04:00 AM
Contractors sent to repossess heavy machinery and trucks from a Belmorgan holding yard at Yallah were yesterday barred from entering the site during a four-hour stand-off.

Four trucks from a Sydney heavy haulage company were left parked on the side of Yallah Rd, near Harrigan Ford, for four hours after they were refused entry to the site about 9am.

It is understood the contractors were sent on behalf of receivers to pick up a long list of items including heavy machinery, excavators and trucks.

But they were barred from entering the site by two men who parked a ute across the driveway to the property. The men said they could "not say a thing" when approached for comment.

Two Caterpillar excavators and a third earthmoving machine, each likely to be worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, were parked behind one gate to the property.

Former Belmorgan employees have told the Mercury the site at Yallah was used to store equipment taken from other sites connected to Belmorgan companies, such as the Kemblawarra Business Park and an industrial development on Berkeley Rd, Unanderra.

Several Belmorgan companies are in the hands of receivers after the companies started experiencing cash flow difficulties as far back as 2005.

Receiver David Winterbottom, of KordaMentha, has been appointed to a number of the companies. They include SPV 7 Pty Ltd - the company behind the Ambience shopping centre and residential development at Fairy Meadow - and Kohura Pty Ltd, which was constructing the Kemblawarra Business Park. Those companies went into receivership on January 5 this year.

Another Belmorgan company behind the stalled Gravity development on the corner of Corrimal and Crown streets, Wollongong City Plaza Pty Ltd, is being wound up.

It could not be confirmed yesterday if the Yallah Rd site is owned by a Belmorgan company or leased from another owner.

The truck drivers were believed to be awaiting a court order, sought by the receiver, to allow access to the property to collect the equipment.

But around 1pm yesterday, the wait was called off and the unladen trucks left the site.

The founder and former director of the Belmorgan companies, John Kosseris, yesterday declined to comment. Mr Winterbottom did not return the Mercury's calls.
