The solution to parking meters in Wollongong?

The solution to parking meters in Wollongong?

29 Mar, 2010 09:19 AM
Wollongong commuter car park may soon be your only chance of a free park in the city centre.

Since parking meters were installed last Monday, a space in the CBD now costs $2 for 30 minutes, one hour or two hours.

But with construction of the $11 million four-storey car park expected to be completed by the end of the year, the promise of a free park is not too far away.

A 45m crane has now arrived on the site, next to Wollongong train station, as construction of the ground floor goes ahead.

NSW Transport and Roads Minister David Campbell said the car park was one way to avoid paying for parking in the city.

"From next year, commuters who travel by train to work will be able to use the brand new 350-space commuter car park at the station for no charge," he said.

"Shoppers and people heading to appointments should think about travelling to the Wollongong CBD using the NSW Government's free Gong Shuttle or by local bus services."

A spokesman for Mr Campbell said no measures would be put in place to prevent non-commuters from using the car park.

"Most commuter car park users arrive at the car park before or during the morning peak period and therefore it is genuine transport customers who take up the majority of spaces," he said. "If there are any extra spaces available later in the day, there is nothing to stop other people from using them."

The car park is one of four free car parks - along with ones at Helensburgh, Woonona and Waterfall - to be provided in the region by the end of the year.

I really don't think the 350 spaces is going to cut it for free parking in town. The whole dynamic of the city is going to change. Will it be for the better?

350 spaces? Trains take 3 times more than that from Wollongong railway station, so there will be no or not many parking spots for people coming to City.

While I was reading this article, I thought to myself that people are going to think, why didnt they make a carpark with 250,000 spaces for each person that lives in the illawarra??? wouldnt that satisfy all of the whingers? $2 so what!!! if you cant afford to pay $2 to park, how can you afford to drive? get over it everyone!!

the use of the free shuttle mentioned in this story is ok for the small majority that live in fairymeadow on or close to the shuttle bus rout what about the other residents of wollongong that live in woonona, figtree unanderra dapto what we would have to do is drive 3km north/south or further if comming from say dapto then park our cars some were along the buss rout probably which is only 2 hr parking there anyway whats the point this buss service was only put in for the elite few who live along the beach front and the overseas uni students not for the real residents of the illawarra we in the outer suburbs have the right to a free shuttle buss service as well.

Parking in Wollongong CBD is not "just $2"! Because its not $2 once - its $2 over and over and over again. All added up, this is going to cost our family several hundred dollars every year and I would much rather spend that money on my kids than give it to unelected & unelectable administrators. Give us back our free parking!!

Great points Bob. People can afford a packet of cigarettes but can't afford $2 parking fee. And I can't see how free parking at a run down part of town which is some considerable distance from the main shopping precinct would even be considered a solution. What a beat up!

Free shuttle bus service is a NSW government initiative for University students and employees to utilize due to considerable issues with parking in vicinity of University. It is not designed for residents in Woonona, Dapto and Figtree or residents in general or any other suburb for that matter to be used as a free bus. The free bus travels along a route where numerous University students reside, Campus east for example, to facilitate access to University and facilities. The fact that a good number of residents and the community actually go out of their way to park and utilise the free shuttle is commendable. The big picture here is if the residents are so against the $2 parking implemented by Council, a campaign to NOT UTILISE any $2 PARKING areas WHATSOEVER should be undertaken by all residents. If no $2 parking meter fees were to be forthcoming and subsequently no revenue, it would most definitely send a big message to Council.

Hey Bob, People are going to get use to it by not parking in Wollongong at all and spending their money elsewhere. The tragedy is that Wollongong businesses will suffer permanently. If you don't believe me have a look at how empty the streets are! The council has been greedy by having too many half hour and one hour spaces that are not good value for your two dollars.

So BOB you are one of those people who call anyone with an opinion a whinger. Well why dont you address your comments to the many pensioners out there who use their car - their last remaining luxury - to go into Wollongong to attend doctors appointments. People like Bob are the reason we lose services with the overused and dismissive cliche 'get over it'.

Nice comment BAG. If we totally do not use those useless parking meters there will be no revenue and then the unelected/unelectable administrators just might get the message! I certainly will not even go to Wollongong anymore let alone use the meters.
