Touch of India on Cliff Rd

04 Jun, 2009 09:27 AM
Wollongong's Cliff Rd jewel is to be replaced by a two-storey home with a basement for use by executives from Indian mining company Gujurat NRE.

Plans lodged with Wollongong City Council show chairman Arun Jagatramka will follow through with what he told the Mercury earlier this year and use the "company house" to entertain and accommodate mining executives visiting from overseas and his own family.

A feature of the box-like building will be a large entertainment area on the ground floor.

That floor will also contain a dining area, powder room, kitchen and guest bedroom with ensuite.

The first floor includes bedrooms, laundry, prayer room, kitchenette and balcony overlooking the ocean.

The submission says the design of the house reflects Wollongong's "culturally rich and diverse" nature.

"This diversity in design is exhibited through the variation in materials, colours and textures, thus bringing in an element of surprise and creating interest among the onlookers."

The owner of the home previously on the site, Norma Spence, went down in Illawarra folklore for her determination to resist all offers from developers for her home.

But when she died in 2007, her adult children decided to sell the cottage as it was the only way all family members could benefit equally.

The house was demolished in April.

Mr Jagatramka spends about 10 days of each month in Australia.

"Basically (the house) will be for the directors, including myself, and also a few company functions," he said in March.

I hope the shareholders will be given the opportunity to drop in for a coffee and curry!

Obviously a smart move so he can put all costs through his company, good tax move and he can still use it as his house.

I am saddened by the loss of one of Wollongong's historic houses. Who in Wollongong cares for the town's heritage??

Down goes another piece of our heritage.

Build a bridge 'Saddened' - the Spence house was neglected for years and crumbling away. As is the North Beach Bathers Pavilion - time to renovate and put something of use to the community in its place. I think this new home looks appropriate for the location and should mix in well with other Cliff Rd properties.

Arun Jagatramka is obvoiusly a man of his word. I think that the design is both tasteful and different to the other buildings on Cliff Road. Diversity in design should be applauded. The views from the front balcony and rooftop will be breathtaking to say the least. As sad as it was to see the old home disappear it is refreshing to see a new jewel appear. Arun Jagatramka and his family will enjoy the morning sunrise and late night electrical storms that this wonderful address brings. As one chapter closes the next one begins.

I hate the way bulldozers smash old buildings in demolitions. Surely it was possible to recycle some of the good old wood, bricks and especially the little stained glass windows, I hope they were removed. This is a time when everything should be recycled and the Spence family should have demanded it be demolished in an environmentally friendly way.

Hmmm... must admit that I'm not all that impressed with the design - maybe it's just the angle shown in the artist's impression, but really it's nothing that special. Disappointing...
