Towradgi: Elderly woman escapes house fire

10 Feb, 2012 05:54 PM
An elderly woman has been saved from a fire that ripped through a house in Towradgi this afternoon.

The fire, which started about 12.45pm, has nearly completely destroyed the inside of a fibro home on Elizabeth St.

Fire and Rescue NSW contained the fire within 20 minutes.

It is understood a 94-year-old woman was at home alone when the fire started, and was helped from the house by passers-by.

Paramedics examined the woman before taking her to Wollongong Hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

A man was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but did not require hospital treatment.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze.

Does anyone know if the woman is still in hospital? She's a neighbour of mine and my family is on our way home from holiday when another neighbour contacted us to tell us. We're worried because she lives alone and we want to check that she hasn't sustained injury.
