Forty-three Wollongong-based steelworkers will be without a job by the end of the week after a decision by Transfield Services to cut its workforce by 10 per cent.Workers were given redundancy applications yesterday in the second round of job cuts by the company since December.Transfield employs about 470 people and contracts maintenance workers to BlueScope Steel, who recently reduced their use of contractors.According to the Australia Manufacturing Workers' Union (AMWU), Transfield may force employees to take redundancy, potentially setting the stage for an industrial dispute.AMWU spokesman Brad Hattenfels said Transfield had "virtually guaranteed" forced redundancies.Transfield Services spokesman Peter Selby said the company would "offer affected employees full redundancy entitlements and examine redeployment opportunities within Transfield Services".
