Why should the Dragons play in Wollongong?

19 Aug, 2009 06:04 PM
As the St George Illawarra Dragons close in on the minor premiership, a battle is developing between the joint venture partners' two bases - in Wollongong and Kogarah - over the right to hold the home semi-final on the first weekend of the NRL finals series.

Both venues have pencilled in September 13 to host the qualifying final - which will be the only home semi-final for the Dragons.

St George Illawarra chief executive Peter Doust has rejected suggestions there are moves within the club's corridors of power to ensure the game is played at Kogarah.

He said a decision would be made following Friday night's clash with Brisbane in Wollongong.

In the lead-up to that match, we would like to hear your thoughts.

There's only one real reason and that's because we haven't been beaten down here all eyar. If we beat the Broncos on Friday i think the Gong will win out. That said, i really think its Kogarahs turn to host a final.

This is a tough one - most of the team's best players currently either were born in Wollongong or live in Wollongong. While I would love to see the game played in the Gong, I think Kogarah will win out in recognition of the club's history and the larger fan base residing in Sydney.

Semi finals arn't about gate takins, it's all about the fight to get to the grand final. To have a home semi final is an advantage a huge advantage, the best advantage for the Dragons is to hold there semi final at win stadium. You can also look at the table and say Qld will have one with the Titans, Melbourne will have one with the Storm, Sydney will get one with the Bulldogs, to look at the way those teams will have an advantage with there semi's the dragons would want the same. The same advantage is to hold it at Win Stadium. Regards Jason T.

Why isn't this type of decision made at the start of the season rather than having all the drama at the end. Planning is why the board get the big bucks.

The record speaks for itself in Wollongong, they should be playing here, in the Red shirts... Watch the crowd that turns up on Friday, it will be packed, imaging that crowd plus more for the final...

And if this Article was run in the Leader, the slant would be Pro-Kogarah. This Paper shouldnt politicising this issue. Whats best for the team is all that should matter. I am a Sydney Based supporter and desperately want a final at Kogarah, and Wollongong has had finals games in the past. BUT, if its the difference between winning and losing, then pick the 'Gong, but remember Kogarah is now a state of the art facility and lets face it theres alot of work needed at WIN. Go The Dragons

As much as I love Kogarah, my heart says Wollongong. It may not hold as many occupants, but the atmosphere is amazing at WIN. Easier to access (parking and getting through crowds at Kogarah is a nightmare compared to Wollongong) and I agree with Jason T - likely that the Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney will each host a final - why not try to fill Wollongong with as many Dragons fans as possible! If for some reason the boys lose first week, give Kogarah the elimination final for week 2. In the end, Wollongong boasts more juniors in the first grade team, the majority of players and coaches live in Wollongong and the Illawarra faithful are always ignored (so sick of hearing the Dragons referred to as ST GEORGE). Give us something for a change!!!

the dragons should play in wollongong. the point is we in wollongong should be reconised, because the dragon do train in wollongon and most importantly the team is called the St. George ILAWARRA Dragons. we really do deserve to see our boys play in a game which helps determine our spot in the 09 premiership. GO DRAGONS!

It should be 50/50. Where was the last finals game held?

Wow Dragon 09, you seem to have totally ignored the St.George part of St.George Illawarra Dragons. I am so sick of hearing how many juniors are playing in the team ad nauseum, the FACT is if they werent playing for St.George Illawarra, they would be wearing another jersey not of the Illawarra persausion. Your team went under, ours may have but didn't, instead we BOTH got a lifeline. For the Illawarra fans that keep on about the juniors, WHO WOULD HAVE PAYED THEM???? Bobby Steeler couldnt afford to anymore, think about the JV and where the dollars funnel in from before you keep whining about "OUR" juniors. They would all play elsewhere if it wasnt for ST.GEORGE Illawarra and then you would have nothing. And if you all want to roast me thats fine, but read my previous post first please, I am Pro Dragons, not Saints or Steelers.
