Wild weather causes chaos

05 Sep, 2010 12:30 PM
Wild weather is causing chaos across the Illawarra and South Coast, with winds of up to 120 km/h battering the region.

The Carlton League Grand Finals due to take place today have been postponed until next Sunday, due to severe damage at WIN Stadium.

RTA crews are patrolling the Princes Hwy between Wollongong and Bega clearing fallen trees and debris that has been swept onto the roads. Drivers are being asked to avoid using the hwy or to delay their journeys as the strong winds continue.

A number of cars and homes have also suffered damage as a result of the weather conditions.

The NSW State Emergency Service has advised people in the region to stay well clear of any damaged trees and fallen power lines. Residents should also secure or put away loose items around the house, yard or balcony.

We are so fortunate to have the SES. Congratulations to the people running the Carlton League at WIN for cancelling. It's ashame other sporting codes didn't prioritise safety

A ridiculous final sentence Julie. I am aware of many other sports that are committed to a duty of care for all safety aspects of players and officials. This is not only a common sense approach but a requirement of affiliation with national and international bodies.

Fb heres egg on your face! The AFL Kiama games at Kiama were not cancelled. A very large tree fell on the field and fortunatly the children who were playing under it before it collapsed had moved. You can talk duty of care all you like fb but not all enforce it. Congratulations to the parents who had their childrens duty of care at heart and went home

My nephews played soccer in that wild weather and it was only called off at lunch time. I agree with Julie not all people and clubs do the right thing! When emergency services were saying don't go out or travel. It is ridiculous that some one eyed one minded sports people didn't cancel. To: Fb a ridiculous statement made by you

I was speaking as a sports administrator and stating facts in respect of what the organisations are required to do - or at least what the sport I am involved with does. If you are not satisfied with what happened you should be stating your case to the sporting bodies your children play in. If you don't get satisfactory responses then take your issue further up the line. You are not going to resolve any issues for future similar situations if relevant persons do not know your concerns.. I can assure you that most junior sporting organisations need more help. Give some thought to helping overcome that situation.
