Wings Over Illawarra: the great air supply

Wings Over Illawarra: the great air supply

01 Mar, 2010 01:14 AM
Memories came flooding back for one passenger who enjoyed a rare flight on the world-famous Connie at Wings Over Illawarra yesterday.

The only flying Lockheed Super Constellation, Connie took to the skies at Illawarra Regional Airport carrying a selection of specially invited guests.

Pauline Milton emigrated to Australia from England in 1948, flying out on a Super Constellation. Because of this, she was invited by the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) to hop on board yesterday morning.

The half-hour flight was considerably shorter than Mrs Milton's first trip in a Connie.

In those early days of aviation, the passage to Australia took five days. Travelling via Rome, Cairo, Calcutta and Singapore, the journey took even longer for Mrs Milton as passengers were delayed in Singapore for five days due to engine trouble.

"It was quite amazing," Mrs Milton said.

"It was early days for flying and it was the first time I had flown."

The North Wollongong resident said the flight brought back many memories.

"I was thrilled to do it and very grateful," she said.

HARS museum chairman Michael Hough said he was delighted with the turnout at the event and expected final visitor numbers to surpass last year's count of 30,000.

Truly a brilliant day. Excellent organisation from a massive team of volunteers. There was something for everyone. Well done & a credit to the Illawarra.

Wish they took more care for those who don't like the noise. But that's too much to ask!

Gee didn't anybody ever tell Barry the facts of life regarding the roaring of jet engines, maybe he can develop silencers for them and then he won't have any reason to complain. Give me a break.

Hey Barry dont live near an airport then... it is simple, the airport was there long before you in 1941 actually and has always had large aircraft as it was used by the military

I have to agree with Barry for all those people who complain about firecrackers, this was 10 times worse. I live in Jamberoo so not that close to the airport, my horses and dogs are still fretting, i feel for any parents out there with babies and other animal owners who live closer to the airport, it would have sureley made the windows rattle and scraed the life out of any young child not expecting such a frigthening episode over head

if you moved close to the airport after it was built and operational, then dont complain. Common sense tells you that occassionally you will be subject to noise. Personally, for the one day a year get over it.

A great day, I did expect noise complaints, Surely those living nearby must expect inconvenience (as most did) for that one day of the year, after all they moved, not the air port.

Finally the silent majority show the loud minority that the airport is here to stay

QUOTE: “Personally, for the one day a year get over it. Posted by Pierre, 2/03/2010 11:33:17 AM” Well, this day for this, day for that (like Convoy for Sick Kids), various parties with no noise limit and fear of retribution from unhappy neighbours that somebody dared to complain. Noise from cars fitted with “Special Mufflers”, not to mention Harley Davidson motorbikes, odd mini bike enthusiast with no right to be on the road at all and unregistered dirt bikes on occasions. The list is long as an arm. Only pity I am not deaf!
