 Wollongong CBD makeover begins

Wollongong CBD makeover begins

23 Nov, 2011 04:00 AM
Wollongong's central business district will be transformed into a construction zone during the next two years with one major development about to begin and a second expected to be given the green light within months.

The GPT Group announced this week its $200 million West Keira complex would be constructed during the next 24 months, while Wollongong City Council is expected to start works on the Crown St Mall upgrade next year.

While the West Keira development, contained within its own site on the corner of Keira and Crown streets, is expected to have minimal impact on shoppers, the Crown St Mall upgrade has the potential to send shoppers fleeing for the quiet refuge of suburban shopping centres.

However, representatives for both parties yesterday reminded people to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

GPT development manager Steven Turner said every effort would be made to minimise the impact from construction on CBD customers.

"For a CBD development, we're fortunate that the West Keira site is well contained and separated from Wollongong Central and the mall," he said.

"We recognise that as with any development of this size there will be some disruption, however we'll be doing everything possible to minimise this where we can.

"Where disruption is unavoidable, we'll be ensuring the community is well informed."

Councillors are expected to decide on a direction for the revamp of the mall when the issue comes before the council at its December 12 meeting.

Councillors will be given the options of progressing with the plan put forward by the administrators, which is already with the Joint Regional Planning Panel for determination, modifying those plans or starting from scratch with a new design.

The council has already committed to not carrying out any works over the busy Christmas period each year for the duration of the project.

I am actually pleased that these things are proceeding but along with others who live in the CBD, I will be keeping a close eye on the parking of the construction workers. For far too long Council parking Rangers have turned a blind eye to illegal parking when it involves construction crews working on CBD projects. They park blocking residents driveways, they park illegally all day on 1-2 hour zones and they throw their food and cigarette wrappers all over the streets. They often just park in car parking bays in apartment blocks. The parking for these workers must be policed like others.

A construction zone! Great. That should do the trick.

Is a construction zone code for less parking?

Some good development news for the gong yet we read comments complaining about council rangers and parking enforcement - some are never satisfied

Finally we get some action, a makeover and some positive news on the CBD and people complain about the parking - don't you wonder how anything gets done in this town.

Did they expect to go to bed one night and wake up the next morning with a new CBD.

Good on you GPT and council....and yes, watch those naughty parkers.

Some of those posting here are the same ones who scream loudest when Council staff play favourites with developers. Seems like there is favouritism from Council staff which is okay to be complained about and favouritism from Council staff that is not okay to be complained about! I think its perfectly reasonable to support the redevelopment of The Mall AND simultaneously want the Council parking officers to perform their job without favouritism towards construction crews. Construction staff block driveways denying people access in and out or parking all day in limited zone is wrong.

Where will all the people come from if we expect the new development to generate income? Does this mean we will lose David Jones and Myer?

City construction staff park where ever they damn well like for as long as they damn well like and with Wollongong Council Rangers failing to act as they do towards anyone else doing the same thing. I have an elderly, disabled parent who I need to get in and out of my driveway during the day to attend medical and other appointments. A first cousin visits weekly is in a wheelchair after a workplace accident. I have children to pick up and drop off twice a day. Ibis construction was a nightmare for us. Council better police it this time!
