Wollongong Central serves up free Wi-Fi

28 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM
Shopping centre giant GPT has beaten Wollongong City Council to the punch in the race to provide free, mass internet connection in the city centre.

GPT said people could now access free Wi-Fi within its Wollongong Central shopping centre.

The council has floated the idea of installing Wi-Fi in Crown St Mall but is yet to consider it in any detail.

Wollongong Central manager Dean Young said shoppers would be able to log on from mobile phones, laptops or tablet devices for up to an hour at a time.

"People now expect to stay connected and be able to respond instantly, whether it's accessing a contact, posting information via Facebook and Twitter, or solving a problem at work," Mr Young said.

"Being able to log on from wherever they are is increasingly becoming a key factor in determining how and where people spend their time," he added.

Wi-Fi users will have access to 40MB of free download, Mr Young said.

Liberal councillor Michelle Blicavs welcomed the new service, saying it would help promote the city to a broader range of people.

She said the council was awaiting a costs and management report on implementing Wi-Fi in the mall.

"I understand it [the report] is progressing and councillors should receive the information to consider in February," she said.

"I'll be pushing to have this go ahead as soon as possible as I believe it is critical for business growth in our region."

Perhaps now Council can focus on its cores of rates, roads and rubbish - and not handouts.

Free Wi-Fi connectivity is now quite commonly available in many hotels, airports and shopping centres overseas. Recent surveys confirm what Dean Young has said that increasingly many people now expect to be able to stay connected for business and social purposes and to be able to respond instantly. For a country that regards itself as progressive and forward looking Australia is already behind the times. It's a no brainer and good on GPT with this initiative.

Exciting days are ahead for Wollongong City. More innovation in this area will help boost businesses, attract more I.T companies and bring people into the CBD.

We should look at countries like Singapore as an example, and maybe borrow a few ideas too.

Here's hoping that Council now stop wasting money on things that aren't their prevue...

Get back to doing what we elected you for, running the city!

A waste of money, at least it's no longer the public footing the bill.

So, I guess this is supposed to change the culture of the mall from a doomed hang out place for teens and encourage business people in there...

How did that go for McDonalds?

Wow, 40MB. That's about 1.5 Rhianna clips on YouTube.
