Wollongong City Council zeroes in on corruption

25 Nov, 2009 09:16 AM
Detailed anti-corruption policies being adopted within Wollongong City Council will not be released to the public as they could be viewed as a "how to guide" on corruption.

Council administrators last night adopted a new Prevention of Fraud and Corrupt Conduct Policy.

The document spells out the differing responsibilities across four levels, from employees to supervisors, directors/managers and the general manager.

But it contains very few specific actions or policies.

Administrator Robert McGregor said the full policy would not be released.

"This document reinforces what we have said that we are zero tolerance on corruption," he said.

"It will be supported by training for staff and also detailed protocols."

Mr McGregor said several recommendations by the Independent Commission Against Corruption had been adopted.

Just 18 months for the Wollongong Administrators to bring to life a policy document, light on detail, that supposedly will deal with the prevention of corrupt practices. I guess you could call that a good result! So if they are done now, can we please have our Council back?

Shutting the gate is good, especially as only some of the horses have bolted! I suspect there's still a few in there somewhere. Slowly, slowly, catchee monkey.

Yeah. Now the State appointed Administrators are pumping out fluffy ducks with no Transparency. Just set up a donations box outside the lifts before you go in ask for anything. That should be transparent enough. G-O Wollongong!

when ever I hear something about our council,I think about the nazi state it operates in,with holding information, internal inquires, dictating what goes, little if any public input coincided, the public has no say,so I say save ya breath people,we should fire em'all and have a re election

So much for transparency. There was an ICAC Investigation, wasn't there? Silly me, of course, there was. Some people had to leave Council. All I can say is, when there is an election of new councillors, it'll be interesting to see who runs.

How will members of the public know if protocol is being met if they do not know what the protocol is? How can anything be questioned by any external body if they do not know the rules that the "council" are operating under?
