Wollongong may be forced to wait another fortnight to find out if the foundation club is a part of the NewNBL.
The Hawks' joy at finding a white knight in the form of Indian mining magnate Arun Jagatramka was tempered by Basketball Australia chief executive Scott Derwin delaying the announcement of the new league yesterday.
Derwin played down rumours that new teams from Sydney and Brisbane could be involved in the new league.
Indian magnate saves Wollongong Hawks PROFILE: 'Kolkata boy' Arun Kumar Jagatramka SLIDESHOW: A tribute to the Wollongong Hawks"I'm not able to say (what cities will have teams)," Derwin said.
"All I can say is there's strong interest from right around Australia and we're confident we'll make up a very good new national league.
"The applications have come from the areas we wanted the applications to come from and where we thought they'd come from.
"We're hoping within two weeks (we will make team announcements).
"There are still some details which will take at least another week to get through."
It is believed the NewNBL will be made up of 10 teams, with Brisbane the only club that didn't compete in the NBL last season.
The delay has increased speculation that a last-minute Sydney bid, which would help with the profile of the league, was being considered.
The Hawks have met the criteria with $450,000 in membership pledges and the $1 million surety from Mr Jagatramka.
However, captain Mat Campbell, who led the Save the Hawks campaign, was reluctant to claim a spot in the league yesterday.
"Fingers crossed, but I can't see any reason why we won't be in there now," he said.
