Fairy Meadow poultry keeper Alan Bishop reckons he has found a superchook with the ability to lay golden eggs.
Chookie, as she is affectionately known, has a proven record with a string of gargantuan googies but the most recent was a stunner weighing in at 113.3g - more than double your average egg of around 55g.
"I just looked at it and thought 'ouch'," Mr Bishop said.
He has been researching Australian records and believes this latest egg has cracked it.
"There was a recent article about a chicken in Queensland which laid a record egg at 101g - Chookie broke that ages ago with eggs weighing 103g and 107g," he said.
Mr Bishop bought eight chickens about a year ago for a fresh egg supply and Chookie soon established herself as the head hen.
"There is something about Chookie and it's not just the size of her eggs," he said.
"She struts around the backyard like she is in charge, grooming the others when they need it and butting in on fights to sort things out."
Mr Bishop said everybody in the neighbourhood was aware of her prowess in the egg-laying stakes.
"I've taken some of her previous bests down to the pub (The Charles) for the boys to see but I'm not game to take this one out in case it breaks," he said.
Mr Bishop said Chookie's maxi powers must be genetic because her diet was the same as the rest of the hens - cheap pellets and kitchen scraps.
He believes Chookie can now relax with a personal best in the bag.
"The sizes have bounced around a bit but she outdid herself with this latest one and I don't expect any more surprises."
