Wollongong City Council has unveiled plans for the $5.4 million refurbishment of the city's iconic town hall.
The hall's foyer will be upgraded, new carpet laid and access to the main stage improved under plans outlined in the town hall development application.
Administrator Gabrielle Kibble and the council's general manager David Farmer released details of the development application (DA) this afternoon, and invited residents to provide feedback before July 3.

"Council has already removed asbestos and lead-contaminated dust from the town hall and engaged the NSW Government Architect to develop designs. Now we are looking forward to progressing plans to restore the building," Ms Kibble said.
"Plans for the $5.4 million refurbishment include upgrading the foyer by providing natural light, replacing carpet, upgrading bathroom facilities, reconfiguring the box office and installing a lift to make the town hall accessible to the whole community."
Also included are plans to transform the smaller community hall into a multi-purpose room with bar facilities; the installation of new dressing rooms and showers; and improved access from backstage to the main performance area.
"Council will also complete significant fire safety upgrades to the building," Mrs Kibble said.
She said the refurbishment would coincide with major upgrades planned for the Civic Plaza and Crown Street Mall.
The Town Hall DA will be on public exhibition until July 3, and can be viewed at the Wollongong City Library or level four of the council's administration building.
