A Campbelltown woman was trapped in the wreckage of her car for almost two hours today after it left Appin Rd and smashed into a tree.
Rescue crews were called to the scene, 1km west of the Loddon River Bridge, about 9.40am to find the 50-year-old woman trapped inside the car.
Illawarra Ambulance District Inspector Terry Morrow said the vehicle had crumpled around the woman, pinning her legs and pelvis and encapsulating her in the wreckage.
Paramedics worked to stabilise the severely injured woman, the sole occupant of the vehicle, before a rescue team could remove her from the mangled car.
Fire and Rescue NSW Inspector Gary Williams said two Wollongong crews were called in to carry out the rescue as Rural Fire Service volunteers provided fire prevention support. The woman was pulled from the car about 11.30am.
Insp Morrow said she had suffered multiple serious injuries and was in a critical condition at the time of her rescue.
‘‘She has chest injuries, pelvic injuries - she’s also got multiple fractures of both legs,’’ he said.
The woman also suffered breaks to both arms and had a head injury.
She was taken to Liverpool Hospital by ambulance helicopter and her condition was critical but stable this morning.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
