Wombarra beach pad sells for record $3 mil

08 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
A Sydney house hunter has ended the weekend $3 million poorer after sealing a record real estate deal in Wombarra.

The sale price was $150,000 greater than the seller's reserve and is the highest recorded in the suburb in at least 25 years, according to agent Tony Dribbus.

It came after three-way bidding between two Sydneysiders and an Illawarra resident at the onsite auction at 553A Lawrence Hargrave Dr on Saturday.

The interest is the result of the rare private access to Wombarra Beach leading through the property's backyard.

"In Wollongong and the northern (suburbs) there's less than a handful of streets that have true beach access and that's what really pushed the price up," said Mr Dribbus, of Ray White Thirroul.

The property includes five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a double garage. It was built 10 years ago.

The sale is believed to be the second-highest recorded in the Illawarra's northern suburbs in at least 25 years and is testament to the growing exclusivity of Wombarra.

Prices in the suburb now start at about $580,000.

" It's got a small population ... and you've still got the ability to go to Sydney and earn a Sydney income," Mr Dribbus said.

Demand for waterfront properties was sluggish from 2004-2008 but had picked up in the past two years, he said. The new owner plans to live in the home.

Wouldn't it be nice to have that sort of money.

I remember when everyone in Wombarra knew their neighbours, and everyone else. Not so today. The Sydneysiders with pots of money have turned it into a mini Vaulcluse.

Big shame as the community spirit has gone. I suppose that is to be expected, as nowadays one doesn't even know the neighbours, let alone lend a helping hand as was the practice in years gone by. They call it progress

Great news, if ocean level moves up a bit, might convert the area to salmon or oysters production.

Great, another excuse for northerners to stick their collective noses higher in the air.

Well they do say there is a sucker born every minute. If they had come 5 mins down the road where I live, they could have had a better house for a quarter of the cost. But they'd also have to drop the snobbery about ten degrees too.

Congratulations on a great buy. I hope the buyer is happy with what they have purchased with their hard-earned money, and wish them all the luck with their newfound haven. Even hope they find some nice friends in the wombarra area, even though some representing the neighbourhood seem to have forgotten their manners in this post.......

Good luck to the new owners and welcome to your new neighbourhood. There is plenty of community spirit in Wombarra, keep the prices up so we can keep the envious ones out!
