Woonona cyclist killed on M4

11 Apr, 2010 10:18 PM
Police are appealing for witnesses to a crash in which a 37-year-old Woonona cyclist was killed in western Sydney on Saturday.

The cyclist, named by Sydney media as David Williams, was among a group of three men and a woman riding in the breakdown lane of the M4, near the Northern Rd overpass at South Penrith.

About 7.40am, they were struck by a westbound B-double truck that police allege had veered into the breakdown lane.

POST YOUR TRIBUTE TO DAVID WILLIAMS BELOW.

It is understood the group was riding from Edensor Park to the Blue Mountains.

Mr Williams died at the scene while the other three cyclists - a 20-year-old woman and 27-year-old man from Edensor Park and a 24-year-old Bossley Park man - were taken by ambulance to Nepean Hospital suffering serious injuries.

The truck driver, a 27-year-old Glenmore Park man, was taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

Police set up a crime scene and officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit are investigating the collision.

The westbound lanes of the M4 were closed for several hours on Saturday.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is urged to contact the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit on 8882 1458 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

In the 70's when it was the "F4", there was a big sign at each on-ramp. It displayed "Prohibited on Freeway" followed by a list of about half-a-dozen things. Three I remember were: long wide loads, horse-drawn vehicles, and bicycles.

Just another reason why cyclists should not be on freeways.

Markm, you've got that the wrong way around. Cars and trucks should not be allowed on freeways.

You can't restrict cyclists from where they should ride. Having known one of the cyclists and the wife of the victim, my heart goes out to all of them. He died doing what he loves. Rest in peace Dave.

David was the family's own energizer bunny. David was all there for you if you needed a hand. With David family always came first. To me David was more than just a cousin, he was a mate. My wife & I will missed David terribly. R.I.P. David
