Woonona playground moved because of hoons

24 Jun, 2009 11:27 AM
Wollongong City Council will pay $74,000 to relocate a Woonona children's playground after repeated attacks by vandals.

Residents living near the Edgewood Estate playground on the corner of Gahans Lane and High St had complained repeatedly to the council of graffiti and damage to the equipment at the park.

The Mercury understands teenagers frequently used the reserve as a meeting spot for drinking and loud partying after dark.

Play equipment and a picnic shelter were regularly broken and spray painted, litter was left in the reserve and neighbouring houses were pelted with eggs.

"Together with police, council carried out a safety audit at the site and held a community kiosk with residents to discuss concerns and options to address the issues," a council spokeswoman said yesterday.

"Based on community feedback, council is now constructing a new playground and picnic shelter on the western side of the creek to provide more visibility and increased safety. The new playground will cost council $74,000 and includes softfall, fencing and a picnic shelter."

The older equipment was set back further from the road, making it difficult for passers-by to see it.

The new equipment will be installed by the end of this month just metres from High St.

Due to its proximity to the road and creek, the new equipment will have to be fenced to keep children using it safe.

Once construction is completed, the old equipment will be removed.

Once the "old equipment is removed", Then relocate the sqaure sun shelter/picnic tables down to the park in Pioneer Beach Estate in East Woonona. Council replaced the old play area in PBE/ last year, but a sun shelter is needed for the many mothers/parents with children in prams who visit the play area, and have nowhere to sit whilst supervising their older children who are playing on the new play equipment. Please use this/recycle this shelter so as to provide some comfort for the people who use this facility down at PBE. After all, this is a council owned estate, not built by developers, but owned by the rate payers. A shelter would enhance this area greatly, and be used almost everyday by local residents, at very little cost to place it there.

would have thought it would of been much cheaper for the police to do regular patrols of the area and chase out any offending drunks.

I have written/e-mailed council with my above request, so hopefully they will consider it with seriousness, and not just demolish this asset that could be used and is needed elsewhere in the community. We don't need a new shelter down in Pioneer Beach Estate, this one being dismantled and recycled would be great, and also save costs and the use of materials that council already has. Lets just see if this can be done. Lets hope council is up with the times, and reuses this shelter where it is needed.I'll keep you informed of the outcome! Hopefully local people will get behind me on this one, for the benefit of all who use this facility.

The new strategy on hoons is to give up and let them have certain streets and public spaces where they can break the law without being charged. Part of the strategy is to spend money on moving public property out of the way so that the hoons don't hurt themselves on swings and other children's play things. I hope someone gets a huge bonus for coming up with this wonderful and thoughtful policy.

Hoons, vandals, drunks won again. I just wander why gated secure suburbs don't spring up yet like in USA. The way it goes we are not safe at all!

It is about time the Wollongong City Council got proactive and have rangers undertook regular patrols of reserves and parks and Council property to detect offenders, gather suitable evidence and prosecute offenders. and place the offenders before the Courts. It is not just a police matter.

I have been up to Edgewood Estate to have a bow peep at the sun / weather shelter. This shelter would be perfect for what I have suggested down at Pioneer Beach Estate (PBE) playground, that at present has no shelter, for the many many familys that use this play area. The shelter is 6m x 6m in roof coverage, and would be a very low cost to dismantle and relocate down at PBE. The most expensive cost would be for the concrete slab. Progress is humming along on the "new playground" located approx. 30 meters from the "old playground" at Edgewood. Lets hope council re-uses/recycles this shelter again, and I know the perfect place to use it!
