Wollongong City Council will pay $74,000 to relocate a Woonona children's playground after repeated attacks by vandals.
Residents living near the Edgewood Estate playground on the corner of Gahans Lane and High St had complained repeatedly to the council of graffiti and damage to the equipment at the park.
The Mercury understands teenagers frequently used the reserve as a meeting spot for drinking and loud partying after dark.
Play equipment and a picnic shelter were regularly broken and spray painted, litter was left in the reserve and neighbouring houses were pelted with eggs.
"Together with police, council carried out a safety audit at the site and held a community kiosk with residents to discuss concerns and options to address the issues," a council spokeswoman said yesterday.
"Based on community feedback, council is now constructing a new playground and picnic shelter on the western side of the creek to provide more visibility and increased safety. The new playground will cost council $74,000 and includes softfall, fencing and a picnic shelter."
The older equipment was set back further from the road, making it difficult for passers-by to see it.
The new equipment will be installed by the end of this month just metres from High St.
Due to its proximity to the road and creek, the new equipment will have to be fenced to keep children using it safe.
Once construction is completed, the old equipment will be removed.
