Jennie George's retirement puts Stephen Jones in the hot seat

20 Nov, 2009 02:20 PM
The retirement of Jennie George paves the way for Community and Public Sector Union national secretary Stephen Jones to be the new Throsby MP after the election.

Yesterday's events, predicted by the Mercury last month, will allow Mr Jones to submit his nomination to the Labor Party national executive, who are set to appoint a candidate to the safe seat.

It is understood he will be nominated today and be declared the candidate by Christmas.

Mr Jones declined to comment yesterday, saying the focus should be on Ms George's announcement.

His appointment will follow a factional deal that has lasted since 1997, which allowed the Labor hard Left to hold Throsby and the Right Fowler, a safe seat in Sydney's west.

There is unrest among rank and file members in the Illawarra and no love lost between factions over the issue, with the Left accusing the Right of a behind the scenes campaign to oust Ms George and discredit Mr Jones' links to the region.

The Right say the Left are hypocrites for not supporting a rank and file vote.

"It's difficult when colleagues consciously brief and talk to the media, usually off the record, of course," Ms George said yesterday.

"... I have never ever picked up the phone to destroy or damage or hurt the credibility of many of my colleagues with whom sometimes I would have quite serious difference of opinions."

Ms George said "brand Labor" had "credibility issues" in the Illawarra, and had a message of advice: "disunity is death".

The Throsby MP reiterated that the decision to retire was her own and she was not pushed. She said other MPs and branch members had asked her to stay on in recent weeks.

"Let me just say with absolute conviction that the decision is mine and mine alone, that I've made together with (partner) Dennis," she said.

Pity the poor people of Throsby getting Stephen Jones as a candidate. Jones has hardly distinguished himself in his time at the CPSU. CPSU members working in Telstra will be glad to see the back of him. Jones gains preselection at a time when thousands of Telstra employees are still to get a decent EBA, Jones contribution to the talks on behalf of CPSU members is to only turn up to talks with the CEO of Telstra David Thodey, no doubt these 'talks' are more geared toward building his own networks and career. Jones has had a history of bailing out when the going gets tough. The people of Throsby can look forward to yet another union official occupying a seat in the sheltered workshop of federal parliament doing weak and ineffective representation, just as he has done for union members. Good riddance Stephen Jones, the CPSU members will not be mourning your loss. Hopefully the branches in Throsby will revolt and not have to suffer you in the end.

He'll be trained like the rest of them, to become a MacQuarie St PUPPET! I was once a union organiser, but resigned because I just could not 'toe' the party line. I actually thought I was there to help look after the members, but was soon told what I was there for, so I left a.s.a.p. What is the definition of a dictatorship? The political parties of Australia. So much for democracy!

This is Jones's pay off for affiliating CPSU members with the ALP - something most members did not want, but our protests got us nowhere. Jones was happy to sell out members and he'll sell out his electorate just as fast.

I was an active unionist in Social Security/Centrelink and worked closely with Stephen. He was the most effective union organiser I have come across. His ability to grasp issues and deal with them effectively for the benefit of the workers was outstanding. The people of Throsby are lucky to have him as their representative. Just go and talk to him with the issues that concern you and test him for yourself.
