Moves to overthrow Premier Nathan Rees

Moves to overthrow Premier Nathan Rees

01 Dec, 2009 11:13 AM
There were moves last night in the NSW Labor caucus to overthrow the Premier, Nathan Rees, in favour of either the backbencher Frank Sartor or the Treasurer, Eric Roozendaal.

The powerbroker Eddie Obeid wanted Noreen Hay to move to the upper house so Mr Roozendaal could stand for the seat of Wollongong to become premier.

The general secretary of NSW Labor, Matt Thistlethwaite, was preparing to throw his support behind Mr Sartor if a vote for a spill got up at a caucus meeting today, senior Labor sources said.

  • Eric Roozendaal denies he will run in Wollongong

Key sources said if the Right faction agreed on a candidate Mr Rees could be gone today. ''No one wants to go into Christmas with Rees still as Premier. Something's going to happen this week,'' a senior Right source said.

The source claimed a chain reaction began when the ALP assistant secretary Luke Foley, from the Left, offered Mr Sartor the transport or treasury portfolios in an attempt to stop him seeking the premiership.

Mr Foley and Mr Sartor denied the conversation last night, though Mr Foley said he had spoken to the former planning minister at a function last week, saying merely that he preferred Mr Rees as leader.

Mr Rees appears to have lost the support of his Treasurer and there was talk last night that the former health minister John Della Bosca could put up his hand for the leadership.

Mr Obeid and the former cabinet minister Joe Tripodi, who usually control 15 to 20 votes in the 49-member Right caucus, prefer Mr Roozendaal or the Planning Minister, Kristina Keneally. It is believed they would not support Mr Sartor.

Meetings between the plotters - including Mr Obeid, Mr Della Bosca and Ian Macdonald - took place at Parliament House yesterday as they sought a candidate in time for a caucus meeting at 11am today. Even if a move does not occur today, the machinations suggest it is only a matter of time before the Premier falls.

  • Talks about finding a replacement were spurred on by a Herald/Nielsen poll published on Saturday that found Labor's primary vote remained at 31 per cent and it trailed the Coalition 55-45 on a two-party preferred basis despite the sacking of Mr Tripodi and a move to ban developer donations at the state Labor conference last month.

Of the poor poll, one MP said: ''Even a dead cat bounces.''

Yesterday the Rees camp was calling Right MPs to firm up support and there was talk of party expulsions if MPs again suggested the independent MP Richard Torbay stand for premier.

Why have we not heard from the President of the NSW Labor Party. The issue running currently involving the Federal Liberal Party is hogging the headlines but this issue is just as important. It would appear that ego's have been bruised and now a number of the aggrieved are flexing their political muscles. All I can say is , heaven help us all if Sartor gets the numbers. Moving Hay to the Upper House will have no ramifications for the people of Wollongong, she is useless in either House. The fingerprints of Bernie Riordan are all over this back stabbing exercise and getting Sartor into the Premiers chair might make the people of NSW wake up and kick this mob out.

"Even a dead cat bounces"? These people have a sever delusional illness, if they think they can carry on like this for years and the voting public won't remember. Never in a million years will I vote for this pack of ratbags again.

Political partis of both persuasions are akin to a pork chop in a synagogue/or mosque. What a bunch of misfits. We have anti racial, anti sexist, anti everything else regulations, but these red necks are carrying on a war of words that defies belief. With councils an Administrator can be appointed. Pity there is not a similar system for State and Federal politics.

Noreen Hay moved aside for the Eric the Rooster. When you talk of not voting for politicians perhaps you should consider voting them right out of government by directing your own prefferences. and putting all the garbage dead last on your ballot paper. So easy just do it !

At times one gets impression that State politicians are only concerned about themselves, not the state.

Why can't people see the trogan horse or the deliberate distration in this?? Of course there will be a new Premier, sooner rather than later...

Roozendaal to stand for the seat of Wollongong? Bahahaha - once again NSW Labor demonstrates its contempt for the people of the Illawarra.

I actually don't mind Rees. He appears to be trying to do the right thing for NSW but I will not vote for labour because they have lost the plot (never mind always ignoring Wgongs needs). I have never heard of a party being more out of control. Self interest, backstabbing etc. Sure all politicians do the same, but NSW labour is out of control. Getting rid of Rees will just make me want to punish them even more come election time.

Nathan Rees I don't mind. It's the other Politicians he has around him, that turn me off the Labor Party, especially the ones supposedly representing the Illawarra. When Noreen Hay goes, I might even vote Labor once again.
