Illawarra ultra marathon runner Dave Taylor has assembled a strong support team in his bid to break the seven-day world record on a treadmill at Wests Illawarra Leagues Club.Taylor, 57, will be attempting to run more than 811km from October 17 to 24, and earn a place in the Guinness Book of Records. At the same time, he will raise funds for the police injury fund, the PCYC and the Kerryn McCann breast cancer appeal. McCann, a dual Commonwealth Games marathon champion, died of breast cancer last year. When Taylor announced his record attempt, the world record was 736km, but United States airman Brendan Brustad set a new distance of 811km in Oklahoma City last month."That's just made me keener to break the world record," Taylor said.Taylor's support team, headed by his manager-coach, former Australia rugby league international and Wests Illawarra director John Dorahy, and World Masters athletics champion, Marie Kay, will play a crucial role in his attempt. The team includes Taylor's sidekick Garry "Forrest" Preston, Kembla Joggers runner Marty Weston, statistician Peter Clarke, Wests Illawarra marketing manager Stacey Crobeski and Wave FM's Dave "Stretto" Stretton."I'm very pleased and honoured to work with Dave on his next and final run for charity," Dorahy said."He's a champion guy that's done some wonderful things in charitable events over past years and this particular one is for the Kerryn McCann breast cancer appeal along with the police injury fund and PCYC, so I think it's a fantastic cause."Kay said she was pleased to be part of Taylor's team."I've known Dave for a long time and he's a wonderful guy," Kay said. "He's a real inspiration and always out there for anyone who needs help. He's the first person to put his hand up."So when he asked me to help - open arms."Clarke will record the statistics, which are vital for rests and targets, Crobeski will help organise the event, and Stretton will play a pivotal role, promoting the attempt."As an elite athlete, Marie will make vital decisions for food, fluids and the like," Taylor said. "For me mentally John will make sure I rest when needed."I usually push my body to the limit with no rest."John will make sure I rest when needed for recovery."Mentally I'm strong and don't give up. But having a great team will be the difference."I'll do the hard work and they can steer me."
