Dragons suffer second pre-season defeat

11 Feb, 2012 11:00 PM
A tenacious comeback wasn't enough to get St George Illawarra over the line in last night's 18-12 trial defeat to the Cowboys in Perth.

Despite fielding the strongest line up so far under rookie coach Steve Price, the Dragons couldn't eclipse North Queensland's 18-point spree from the opening 20 minutes.

Off the back of a late first-half try, the Red V slowly but surely began to show elements of their trademark defence, holding Neil Henry's men scoreless in the closing stanza.

After 30 minutes locked at 18-6, a burrowing Jake Marketo lessened the deficit to eight, giving his side a glimmer of hope with 10 minutes remaining.

The Dragons created several opportunities, much to the delight of a vocal 8523 crowd, but none led to points on the board.

The loss leaves Price with less than a week to reshuffle his playing roster ahead of the Dragons' annual Charity Shield game against the Rabbitohs.

Could be a long season coming up for them. Will test the mental resolve of the players. No wins & no local home ground to play off for some time yet - if ever !! Plus member numbers dropping off & no board committment to playing in W'gong from next year. As the great Coach Jack Gibson said "Premierships are won in the back office".

Two trial games and all the niff nuffs come out from under their rocks with the doom and gloom predictions.. The dragons are moving along nicely and will be a big threat again this year when the real season starts.

Have the Dragons' no centre partner for Cooper ?

@shane The only thing that moved along nicely was the second string Cowboys half combo who carved up the Dragons, trial or not it was a poor effort

Cooper is boring, they need players that can put moves on in the back line, run around the inside center and bring the full back in, gives us some flair. I will be surprised if they make the top 8.

So who were you barracking for Victoire? I bet the cowboys, like most others.
