Champion Wollongong athlete Marie Kay has taken Most Outstanding Female Athlete at the Australian Masters Athletics awards. The annual awards were presented in Adelaide over Easter.Kay, 49, received the honour after an outstanding performance at the World Indoor Championships in Clermont-Ferrand, France, where she won gold in the 200m, 400m and long jump. She broke the world record in both the heat and final of the 200m, and went on to smash her own record of 59.18sec in the 400m final with an outstanding 56.99sec.For good measure, she also set a new national record in her long jump winning performance.Kay continued her fine form at the Oceania Championships in Townsville, where she won seven gold medals and set two Australian records in the 60m and 80m hurdles. She was nominated by Oceania for the IAAF Masters Female Athlete where she was later voted runner-up to the eventual winner. At the Athletics NSW awards on April 18, Kay was the winner of the masters sprint/hurdles award. She was also a member of the winning open 4x400m relay team at state championships. And Kay has four No 1 world rankings and six in the top 10."As you know, I didn't race at nationals this year, I was selected to race in Adelaide the week before for the Australian Open Club Championships by my club," Kay said."I thought it was such an honour to be asked to compete in open competition."I jumped at the chance. I won the 200 hurdles which is an event that's not on my program, but i was determined to prove my inclusion in the team."It was an exciting day and the win was a bonus - our women's team placed second."Kay, who was an Australia Day ambassador this year, is now training hard for the upcoming World Athletic Championships in Lahti, Finland. Her goal is to win her fifth consecutive heptathlon title and to become the first woman ever to win three in one age group. She will also be defending her world titles in the 400m and long jump and should be selected in the two relays events.
