The occasion probably couldn't have been any bigger for Wollongong Hawks captain Mat Campbell and his long-time partner-in-crime Glen Saville.
Moments before the Hawks took on the Adelaide 36ers last night, Campbell and Saville were the toast of 5674 fans, with the club honouring the pair by retiring their playing singlets.
Anyone who thought Campbell and Saville might be too overcome with emotion to stay focused on the task at hand would've been immediately appeased when the pair each drained their opening shots of the game.
They got the home side off to a perfect start and played major roles in helping the Hawks to a 102-95 triumph.
Campbell was particularly good, finishing with a team-high 23 points, including 6/12 three-pointers.
''Mat Campbell was extremely efficient and played a real inspirational game, both offensively and defensively,'' Wollongong coach Eric Cooks said.
''He hit some big shots and gave us points and he chased (Adelaide guard) Brett Maher down and it was just a tremendous effort. He led from the front. I'm not surprised he played that way. That what he's done for 14 seasons for us, so it's only fitting he should go out like that.
''There's no bigger honour in basketball than having your singlet retired and for him to perform like that on such a big night is huge.''
Cooks tipped his hat to the fired up crowd that provided a finals-like atmosphere and only wished the fans had turned up in force throughout the season.
''The number of people that showed up was tremendous, and for the guys to play like that in front of that type of crowd was great to see. The crowd definitely helped us play better,'' he said.
''At times it looked like we were going to run away with it, and at other times it looked like they might steal it back, but the guys stood up and toughed it out and hit some big shots to seal the win.
''We had a hard year and a lot of uncertainty at different points throughout the year and didn't play as well as we should've at times, but the guys stuck together and played through that. Tonight we played the type of basketball we wanted to play.
''Our only target now is to win one more for the year (tonight against Gold Coast) and hopefully finish in seventh spot.''
