  • Victoria may save day in quest for eighth NBL team That lifelong ambition has been fulfilled and the man known as "Gordie" is looking forward to making his homecoming official when he moves back home in early July."I always hoped one day I'd be able to come back and coach the Hawks," McLeod said."The timing has been perfect for me in regards to my basketball journey. To be coming back next season with the challenges in front of the club is exciting."A smart guard in his playing days, McLeod spent nine seasons with the Hawks, leading the league in assists in 1984, '85 and '87.He joined Hobart in 1989 before finishing his career with Brisbane in 1991.A born leader and teacher, McLeod was the head coach of basketball at the AIS from 1993-97 before re-entering the NBL as coach of the West Sydney Razorbacks. After guiding the Pigs to the 2002 and 2004 grand final series, he stepped down, before taking on the coaching job with the Singapore Slingers in 2006.An assistant coach with the Australian Boomers at the Beijing Olympics, he is now with the Wellington Saints in the New Zealand league."I didn't expect to be coaching back in Wollongong," he said."When I went overseas to Singapore and New Zealand ... being involved with the national team was fantastic, and it was looking like I was getting further and further away."I knew I was always going to come back to Wollongong one day, but I wasn't thinking I'd be coming back as the Hawks coach. To come back and coach in Wollongong is going to be challenging and it's something I'm going to enjoy."Hawks management was delighted to snare the man it coveted."He's got a lot of history with the club and the area and we think he's a good fit ... we think there's going to be a lot of strong sentiment in the area with his long history," club chairman Peter Bahlmann said."He's said a number of times that he regards this area as home, and to have the opportunity to coach and live in this area, it's a real positive for him."Hawks club captain Mat Campbell believes McLeod's appointment is a "perfect fit"."He's had his singlet retired and when people talk about basketball in this town, they mention Gordie McLeod, and to have him back involved is awesome," Campbell said."He brings a lot of wisdom and experience ... he's never underachieved as a coach. Getting that Razorbacks team to the grand final with no imports and what he did with Singapore was a fantastic effort."
