The Wollongong Hawks' dreams of a championship were blown away in a devastating three-minute sequence in tonight's grand final decider against the Perth Wildcats.

Wollongong were behind 61-60 late in the third quarter before the Wildcats took control with a game-altering 17-2 run to win 96-72 in front of more than 4000 delirious fans.

Perth etched their name into the NBL record books by capturing the club's fifth championship.

Close to 200 Hawks supporters made the trip to WA hoping to see the team add the final chapter to their fairytale season.

They were feeling confident after the visitors were up by six at quarter-time and 48-47 at half-time.

The Hawks had fought gamely throughout and were still right where they needed to be for a large part of the third quarter.

But they lost their composure when the Wildcats made their move late in the third-quarter and never recovered.

Difficult not to write the old cliches but the Hawks have done the city proud. Coming from almost extinction to runners up is still a great achievement. Congratulation to Gordy and the team.

It must have been hard to claw back as the Wildcats were landing shots from everywhere. Well done Hawks. Awesome season.

Yes, the Hawks did the 'Gong proud and it was a great coaching performance from Gordie.Without detracting from the performance of the stop gap point guards one is entitled to wonder what might have been if Ty McKee had not been injured. Also the lopsided turnover count hurt badly ( you can't score without the ball) and that "miracle" triple by Kevin Lisch when the clock had clearly run down was a real back breaker. What is really fantastic is that basketball is back in Wollongong, big time. The Hawks are part of the community fabric. Roll on next season!!.

I would have been great for everyone that supported the Hawks to see the Hawks win, but the city should still get behind them because in everyones wildest dreams at the start of the season that almost never was we wouldn't have thought they could make it to finals playoff. CONGRATES to the team and to everyone whoe them to get so far and a special thanks to Mr Arun Kumar Jagatramka

i was one of he many who did a 24 hour turnaround trip to watch the guys play. Everything from the way the players embraced the fans, the way Gordie went around to shake the hand of each and every supporter who turned up to see the boys off from the hotel, the gracious speeches of Gordie and Matt after the match - it all showed the class and spirit of this team. They way the hawks fans stayed back almost to the person to congratulate the Cats as they claimed the crown showed th true Wollongong sportsmanship. I was proud to be seen at Challenge Stadium as a hawks fan, regardless of the result. You're right Jonathon - there are many cliches and superlatives you could heap on this team, and ven though they wnt come home with the silverware - they are stll a bunch of champions.

You can lose by 24 points and still "do the city proud"? And that's ignoring that we're talking about a competiton where a full one-quarter of all the teams make the grand final! It's all a bit sad really.

as a cat fan, obviously stoked we beat the hawks but I must say, Hawks supporters and the town must be very proud to see the way they performed all year and the dignity they displayed after the game....well done. Keep supporting them to ensure they remain in the comp in years to come!!
