The Wollongong Hawks are on the verge of finalising their 2010-11 NBL season playing roster, with the club closing in on a second import.Hawks coach Gordie McLeod met with chief executive Wayne Morris and assistant coaches Eric Cooks and Matt Flinn yesterday. McLeod is hopeful of securing an American point guard within days."We're still doing a little more homework on a few guys and certain things still have to pan out for us, but we're getting pretty close," McLeod said. The Hawks unearthed the find of the year in 2009-10 when they grabbed former Coppin State star Tywain McKee late in the pre-season.The do-it-all playmaker was the popular tip for league MVP honours before breaking down days after Christmas with a season-ending back injury.A fully recovered McKee was almost certain to return to Wollongong, but those plans disintegrated when the 24-year-old's drink-driving charges were revealed in April. As much as the Hawks would have loved to have the mercurial guard back, management would have had a hard time justifying his return if McKee's off-court troubles re-surfaced.McLeod and his coaching staff have spent hours on the internet and the phone over the past few months, following up the smallest leads and extensively researching potential candidates. The reigning NBL coach of the year is cautiously optimistic the exhaustive recruiting process is almost over."These things can still fall through at the last minute for different reasons and it's just a matter of talking it over and making that final call," he said."We're talking to guys and their agents and trying to be as thorough as we can in the way we look at people. Hopefully, we get some good news on that sooner rather than later."Meantime, injured Hawks guard Rhys Martin got through his first preseason training unscathed on Tuesday.Martin rolled his ankle a month ago during a game with the Mackay Meteors in the Queensland Basketball League. The 24-year-old eventually needs an operation, but he has full range of movement and insists his quickness and jumping ability are unaffected.A final decision will be made tomorrow on whether Martin has surgery now or later, although it seems likely he will be part of the preseason and regular season campaign."It's a bit of a catch-22," McLeod said. "There's a chance he could go over on it again, but that's basically the same scenario for every player. He practised well on Tuesday."Tickets are selling fast for the Hawks' double-header at the Snakepit on August 20.Wollongong take on Hartford University at 6pm before a golden oldies-style Hawks Legends game at 8pm.Call the Hawks office on 4229 7722 for bookings.
