Hawks race against time

12 Sep, 2008 05:00 AM
Wollongong coach Eric Cooks was confident last year's injury curse had not come back to haunt the Hawks, despite three key players racing the clock to be fit for the club's NBL season-opener against the New Zealand Breakers.

Captain Mat Campbell trained sparingly yesterday because of a groin injury and star off-season signing Glen Saville is likely to be sporting a splint for six weeks after ripping a tendon in his finger toward the end of Tuesday's practice session.

The pair is expected to play against the Breakers next Thursday, while forward Anthony Petrie is also likely to shrug off a groin injury which kept him out of action yesterday.

But after losing players to long-term injuries last season, the Hawks are crossing their fingers lightning won't strike twice.

"Obviously I'd like to have all 10 players injury-free, but I don't think it's the start of what we went through last season. At this stage we definitely should have everybody on board for our first game," Cooks said.

"Injuries are just the nature of the beast, but it's not so much what happens as it is how you deal with it. We are a deeper team this year, and that's why it's so important to have a talented roster with guys who can cover spots when injuries occur.

"Sav's had X-rays and they're being reviewed, but he and Matty should be right to play.

"Petrie's had some history with his groin, but he's seeing some people about it as a precautionary step and I'm hopeful it's not too serious. A worst case scenario is that it could develop into osteitis pubis. (Former Hawks guard) Damon (Lowery) had that one year with us and sat out some training sessions to manage it, and that's something we might have to do with Petrie if it gets to that stage ... hopefully not."

Meanwhile, the Hawks held their official season launch last night at the CBD Sports Bar.

Club chairman Richard Clifford believes the Hawks are in for a good season and will ride a wave of strong community support.

The Hawks' new slogan for 2008-09 is Pride and Passion.

"We have a rich tradition and are the only club in the NBL that that can proudly say we are a foundation club. This is our 31st season in the league and it's shaping up to be one of the most anticipated in many years," Clifford said.
