Hawks wary of angry Taipans

31 Oct, 2008 03:00 AM
Cairns coach Alan Black believes the odds are stacked heavily in the Taipans' favour heading into this weekend's re-match with the Wollongong Hawks.

The Taipans were sent packing by the Hawks in Wednesday's 101-93 loss at WIN Entertainment Centre after blowing a 14-point lead late in the third quarter.

But the Hawks are 0-4 away from home and Black sounded confident his side would bounce back when the teams lock horns in Cairns tomorrow night.

"It certainly gives you a chance to get one back quite quickly," Black said.

"Back at home we're obviously a bit more comfortable (3-1), and they haven't been very good on the road to date. You look at that and think we're certainly a chance of getting one back very quickly, and in this league you've got to take your chances when you can get them."

Given they lost the rebound battle 48-36 on Wednesday, the Taipans will be keen to return the favour with some rough-housing under the boards tomorrow.

"Nineteen offensive boards was a lot for them, particularly with the size we have," Black said.

"We should've been able to do a better job on the defensive glass, because that gave them a couple of extra chances that hurt us."

The Hawks (5-5) will jump into the top six for the first time this season if they end their road drought against the Taipans (5-4).

"It's always interesting to re-match against someone a couple of days later," Cairns guard Gary Boodnikoff said.

"We don't have to go over a whole lot of Xs and Os, it's more what we do defensively that's going to get it done for us, especially in the fourth quarter.

"We looked good in the third quarter (on Wednesday), but we didn't get it done at the start of the fourth. That's where we were hurt and we couldn't get it back."
