 Heal backing Joyce jnr

Heal backing Joyce jnr

Veteran Gold Coast guard Shane Heal believes the stunning match winner from former Hawk Daniel Joyce could be the making of the emerging talent.

Joyce silenced a hostile WEC crowd on Friday night with a deep three with five seconds remaining to win the game for the Blaze.

"I feel fantastic for Daniel because I know a lot of the players and myself personally have a lot of confidence in Dan. I've seen him grow a lot," Heal said.

"I think he's going to take his game and go even further for the rest of the year."

The 21-year-old, son of Blaze coach Brendan, had 11 points in 28 minutes on Friday night - hitting on three of five from downtown - after he had played poorly in the Gold Coast's loss at the WEC in round six.

"For him to bounce back tonight after the way he played against this team last time was great. Two weeks ago, I thought he really struggled with the emotion of it," Heal said.

"(But) For him to come back and have a really good game is a sign of maturity."

Heal has seen the pressure sons of coaches are under first-hand, having played with and against Andrew Gaze (son of Tigers coach Lindsay) and Simon Kerle (son of Bullets coach Brian).

"Being the son of a coach is really tough and when you play for your dad there is an expectation and so much extra pressure and everything else that's just so unfair for a 21-year-old.

"What he does and what he has done for us, particularly on the road this year, has been unbelievable. You have a look at his stats game by game at what he has done. I think most people would be really surprised," he said of the back-up guard, who has averaged 7.9 points per game this season.

Joyce is the subject of constant taunting by sections of his former home crowd, something Heal, a player fans love to hate, can relate to.

"That's just part of life as a sportsman, you've got to accept that, but I think he has," Heal said.

"It's tough dealing with those things and for someone like Dan it's hurtful because you do hear all of the things the crowd says and he's like 'well, what have I done?'."
