Just when the Wollongong Hawks felt they had taken enough hits over the past week, inspirational captain Mat Campbell has been forced out of the clash with New Zealand.
Campbell has been battling an Achilles problem for most of the season and aggravated the injury in last week’s 91-50 caning from the Gold Coast Blaze.
Full coverage of the Hawks The losing margin ranks sixth among the Hawks’ all-time worst defeats, while their 50-point total was the second-lowest in club history.
A frustrated Campbell was hoping for the best this week but had to resign himself to withdrawing from tomorrow’s meeting with the Breakers.
‘‘The MRI showed a small tear, which probably means a week or a couple,’’ Campbell said.
‘‘Hopefully it mends quickly with a bit of rest and I’ll be able to get back into it.’’
The 17th-year guard had his best game of the season against Melbourne a fortnight ago, with a 17-point haul, earning the NBL Player of the Week award for round 17.
Recently acquired import Ayinde Ubaka will probably get the nod to start in place of Campbell, but the Hawks will need someone to step up to fill the leadership void.
‘‘He had an MRI today - I’m speaking with the doc about it, but he’s looking dodgy,’’ Wollongong coach Gordie McLeod said last night.
‘‘It didn’t pull up very well after the game up there (against Gold Coast) and he hasn’t been able to train this week.
‘‘He tried to warm up at training (yesterday) but got nothing, so we’ll have to get some further tests.’’
The Hawks were hoping to have all hands on deck against the league-leading Breakers, particularly with hard-nosed forward Dave Gruber poised to make his comeback after a 10-week injury lay-off.
‘‘Gruber’s starting to get up and load, so if he gets through practice tomorrow unscathed and pulls up okay then he’ll certainly be considered for the game,’’ McLeod said.
In other news on the Hawks medical front, versatile swingman Tim Coenraad is recovering after a bout of sickness, while tenacious back-up guard Tyson Demos missed yesterday’s session with a virus but is expected to take on the Breakers.
