The new National Basketball League will retain the name NBL for the upcoming season and probably beyond after officials decided against a name change for Australia's troubled men's competition.
In a marked backflip, Basketball Australia decided to retain the competition's name for the new season, planned to start on September 24.
Chief executive Larry Sengstock said he remained confident the eight-team league would be able to capture public interest despite having no presence in Sydney or Brisbane.
And he said the major reason for the NBL moniker staying was that it was recognisable to most Australian sports followers, despite the competition's recent problems.
"If you say NBL in this country, people know what it is. It would be silly for us to let that go," Sengstock said yesterday.
"While we've had some issues with it, it's still got a lot of history."
